PUEBLO, Colo. (February 11, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team's comeback efforts against Simon Fraser University fell short in a 21-19 defeat Saturday on the campus of CSU Pueblo.
The ThunderWolves earned wins by
Gavin Melendez (R-Sr., Los Banos, Calif.),
Ruben Garcia (Sr., Selma, Calif.),
Ben Gould (So., Canyon Country, Calif.) and
Gavin Nye (R-Jr., Gerber, Calif.).
Parker McBride (Sr., Duvall, Wash.) won by forfeit at the 125-pound bout.
At 149 pounds, Melendez picked up a dominating 10-3 decision against SFU's Jacob Alexander-Torres. Through the first period, Melendez carried a 4-1 lead. In the second, he earned an escape point and in the last period he recorded two takedowns and had strong riding time to earn a bonus point.
In the 165 pound match, Garcia totaled four takedowns and earned a big reversal and four-point nearfall in the third period to propel him to a 16-6 major decision win over SFU's Magnus McCrackin.
Gould earned the win at 197 pounds after posting a hard-fought 3-1 win over Rick Feroce. Gould recorded a second period takedown and in the final period earned an escape point for the win. Strong defense over the final minute of action helped Gould stave off Feroce.
The final match of the day came at 285 pounds and Nye used a first period takedown coupled with a point awarded for caution and a third period escape by Nye to lift him to a 3-1 win.
Other close matches on the day came at 133 pounds,
Cyruss Meeks (Fr., Casper, Wyo.) dropped a 4-3 decision against Randy McDonald of SFU. In the 174 pound bout,
Remington Winmill (Fr., Wendell, Idaho) lost a 5-4 sudden victory versus SFU's Patrik Leder.
CSU Pueblo closes out the dual season Saturday at Colorado School of Mines. First match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
