GOLDEN, Colo. (February 12, 2022) - Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling wrapped its dual season on the road at No. 21 Colorado School of Mines Saturday, falling 35-9 to the Orediggers.
The Pack's
Gavin Melendez (R-Sr., Los Banos, Calif.) and
Ruben Garcia (Sr., Selma, Calif.) both earned victories in their respective match.
Melendez totaled five takedowns against Mines' Cody Thompson and earned an escape and a bonus point to propel him in the win. Through the first period, Melendez had built a 6-2 lead with three quick takedowns.
His strong offense and riding time lifted him to his second win in a row.
At 165 lbs., Garcia earned his third straight win after scoring a first period win by fall (1:03) and taking down his opponent, Jackson Damenti in the opening seconds of the match. Garcia's stronghold proved no match as he quickly earned the victory.
In other close matches,
Parker McBride (Sr., Duvall, Wash.) lost a 5-3 decision to start the dual and a valiant effort to earn a takedown fell short at the 125 pound match. In the next bout at 133 pounds,
Cyruss Meeks (Fr., Casper, Wyo.) dropped a 10-6 decision versus Grayston DiBlasi of Mines.Â
CSU Pueblo will stay in Golden and compete at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open on Sunday in the final tune-up ahead of Regionals next week.
