CSU Pueblo ends historic season with 2-0 loss in NCAA Final

Box Score SEATTLE, Wash. (December 3, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team ended a historic season in the NCAA Championship Match, falling 2-0 against No. 1 Franklin Pierce at Interbay Soccer Stadium in Seattle.

In the program's first showing in the NCAA Final, CSU Pueblo managed seven shots against a strong back line from the Ravens. 

Gabriel Campora and Shjon Andrews each hit two shots for the Pack. The ThunderWolves earned four corners in the match.

Franklin Pierce scored first during the 11th minute after a shot and save by Pack goalkeeper Nils Roth resulted in a throw-in for the Ravens. FPU got the ball inside the box and a scramble in front of the net allowed Miguel Angel Pastor Gutierrez to hit the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

The offense remained active and a minute after the goal, Aden O'Hara had a good look at the net and fired a shot the went out of play.

The ThunderWolves continued to have possession and with 32:55 on the clock, earned a free kick from near midfield and after a scramble at the top of the box, Gustavo Murtha fired a shot that sailed high and out of bounds.

Despite giving up the early goal, the first half was controlled mostly by the Pack.

Through the first period, CSU Pueblo recorded a pair of shots and earned one corner kick.

In the second half, the teams battled and exchanged possession to start and the ThunderWolves got the ball into Ravens territory in the 62nd minute and created their best scoring chance when Mario Sandoval hit a shot on goal that was saved. Campora was following the play and took the loose ball and hit a shot bottom center that rolled out of bounds.

With twenty minutes left in the game, CSU Pueblo made a flurry of substitutions and put fresh legs on the pitch.

Franklin Pierce added an insurance goal with 16:34 left in the the match off a strong attack and swift passing.

The Pack would earn two more corners over the last ten minutes but was unable to get a good look at the net.

CSU Pueblo finishes the season with a 19-4-2 record and earned several firsts including making the deepest run into the postseason, most wins in a season, and a D2CCA All-American.
