COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (December 2, 2022) – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's indoor track & field season is underway, and both set the tone for the season with strong performances; while breaking two school records, at the Air Force Holiday Open.
The men opened their season with
Carl Schmidt and
Terrel Johnson in the long jump which saw four ThunderWolves place in the top eight. Schmidt jumped 7.23m breaking the school record by 3cm for a second-place finish. Johnson jumped 7.03 for fourth,
Dejuan Walcott jumped 6.82m for sixth, and rounding out the ThunderWolves was
Cedrick Kassi with 6.78m for eighth. Schmidt also ran the 60m hurdles and finished third with a time of 8.21 seconds. Kassi (13.88m) and Walcott (13.65m) also competed in the men's triple jump and finished seventh and ninth respectively.
Nate Miller and
Justin Jenks once again took home the top two spots in the shot put respectively. Miller opened up his final season with the ThunderWolves by throwing 17.95m, Jenks furthest mark on the day was 16.95m. In the weight throw Jenks (5
th place) took the win in between the competitive duo with a throw of 16.83m, while Miller (7
th place) threw 16.17m.
In a field of all CSU Pueblo athletes,
Reece Sharman-Newell won the men's mile run in 4:18.90, followed by
Ritchie Roberds 4:27.85 and
Kaleb Beloy 4:28.36.
To wrap up the meet for the men in the 4x400m relay we saw our men's team consisting of Johnson, Schmidt, Tipton, and Sherman-Newell run a 3:21.15.
The women's side posted strong performances in their opener with
Olivia Mikaelian breaking the women's school record in the weight throw with a throw of 17.93m, that placed her 3rd in the meet. The throw from the meet bests her school record from last year by 49cm.
Heather Graham placed 11th at the meet with a throw of 14.88m.
Mary Scoggins led the ThunderWolves in the 300m, finishing with a time of 44.43 seconds and not far behind was
Ella Harris who ran 44.51 seconds.
Mikayla Jones finished in seventh place in the high jump with a jump of 1.60m. She also finished eighth in the triple jump with a 10.91m jump.
In the women's shot put
Febe Wessels took third place with a throw of 13.84m, in fifth place was
Katherine Higgins with 12.87m, Graham was sixth with a throw of 12.65m and rounding out the top 10 was Mikaelian with a throw of 11.34.
Both teams will be back in action on next week December 9-10 in Colorado Springs for UCCS Pre-Holiday Invite and Multi.
