Pack finish 2-1 at Desert Duals in Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. (December 17, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team finished 2-1 and picked up two wins against Simon Fraser and San Francisco State and dropped a dual against No. 20 Minnesota State, Saturday at the Desert Duals led by a strong performance in the three duals.

Against San Francisco State
The Pack had a dominating performance against the Gators and earned five pins en route to a 39-6 win.

At 125 lbs., Dominick Castro claimed the first pin fall at just 1:46 over Zach Wright in the opening period

In the 133 lbs. bout, Marquis Kemp earned a 6-2 decision victory against Stefano McKinney.

At 141, CSU Pueblo's Michael Atencio earned a win by fall less than a minute into the match against Andre Dargani.

Next in the 149 lbs. matchup, Conor Goucher delivered a 10-7 victory and three more team points.

Cyruss Meeks dropped a 6-4 decision against Josh Tolentino in the 157-pound bout.

The Pack's Elijah Valdez fell 4-2 against SFSU's Kyle Botelho during the 165 lbs match.

At 174, Tytus Coombs earned the first of back-to-back pins for the ThunderWolves. Coombs defeated his opponent at 5:42.

In the next match at 184, Jacob Anderson got his opponent pinned in 55 seconds.

At 197, Dominic Robles earned a hard fought 6-5 decision win over Laith Gilmore.

In the 285-pound match, Ben Gould capped the dual with another win by fall for the ThunderWolves. Gould took down his opponent in 26 seconds and sealed the dual win for the Pack.

Against Simon Fraser
The ThunderWolves continued their strong day with a convincing 33-12 win after scoring four more wins by fall along with three decision wins.

In the opening match, Castro fell 6-1 against Maka Yakapin.

At 133 lbs., Kemp lost by fall at 4:21 and in the next bout, Atencio earned a dominating 8-3 win over Randy McDonald.

At 149 lbs., Goucher scored six points for the ThunderWolves with a win by fall at 4:20 against Samuel Patton.

Meeks added to the ThunderWolves lead and earned a win by fall against Elijah Lazar at 4:04 in the 157 pound match.

In the 165 pound battle, Valdez suffered a 3-2 loss to Patrik Leder.

During the 174 lbs. match, Coombs scored another win by fall on the day, taking down his opponent at 4:00.

In 184, Anderson won by fall at 4:23 over Rick Feroce, building the ThunderWolves lead.

At 197, Robles battled it out with Owen Gundmunson and the two fought to a 9-8 decision in favor of Robles.

In the last match of the dual, Gould scored a 3-1 sudden victory win.

Against No. 20 Minnesota State
Facing a ranked Mavericks team was a tough battle for the ThunderWolves as they were beaten 29-12 in the third dual of the afternoon. The Pack won one bout by forfeit and picked up two decision wins.

The Pack's Anderson picked up a 6-1 decision victory at 184, along with another sudden victory win by Gould accounted for six of the ThunderWolves points.

The ThunderWolves struggled to gain much momentum and dropped several decisions by multiple points. At 133 lbs., Atencio battled in a close 3-2 loss against Brock Luthens.

CSU Pueblo enters the holiday break and will return to action on January 6 and compete at the Western Colorado Open in Gunnison.
