No. 9 ThunderWolves score first NCAA Tournament home win with 2-1 victory over Cal Poly Pomona

PUEBLO, Colo. (Nov. 12, 2022) - Colorado State University Pueblo continued its season of milestones and the story continued following a ThunderWolves 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Saturday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The win Saturday is the first NCAA Tournament win at home and the second overall in school history. With the victory, CSU Pueblo picks up their 16th win of the season, a new program record and advances to the Sweet 16 next week with the opponent still TBD.

The ThunderWolves scored two goals in the second half from Dylan Zavatini and Gabriel Campora to power past the Broncos.

In the match, CSU Pueblo out shot Cal Poly Pomona by a 13-7 clip and have seven shots land on goal.

Caio Oliveira and Lamar Bynum both led the Pack's offensive attack with three shots each.

Starting the match, CPP came out of the gate quickly and drove the ball down the far side of the pitch and on a cross pass inside the box, the Broncos' Max Laguna placed a shot inside the upper third of the net for an early 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the game.

After the early goal and in front of a filled Gonzales Stadium, the ThunderWolves came alive and was able to settle and began to play their game in the first period.

The Pack's first shot at the net came during the 14th minute by Oliveira that sailed high above the net. The next opportunity came nearly two minutes later on a shot attempt by Zavatini that went out of bounds.

Oliveira and Bynum both recorded a shot each midway through the first while the defense continued to fight off the high-powered attack from the Broncos.

At the half, CPP held the one-goal lead and the ThunderWolves earned four shots and three corners.

Entering the second half, Reggie Nicolas had come on during the first period and provided quality minutes with being the first to the ball on several occasions.

Ignatius Demark came off the bench and was a force at the midfield and on defense. Demark battled against the tall strikers and helped to limit any big touches by the Broncos leading scorer Paul Roger Henschke.

The Pack got on the board during the 60th minute off a set-piece served in by Oliveira from the far side in to the box and Zavatini climbed above the defense and was able to get his head on the ball that bounced into the back of the net for the 1-1 tied game.

CSU Pueblo's energy level was significantly increased after the goal and the offense was able to keep the ball in Broncos territory against the defense.

The Pack offense was rewarded when a through ball was picked up by Oliveira and while inside the box, the Broncos goalkeeper was given a yellow card and a penalty kick was awarded.

Campora was the one to step in for the attempt and he converted for his 12th goal of the season and gave the Pack a 2-1 lead with just under seventeen minutes left in the second half.

Reigning-RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, Shjon Andrews made his presence felt and numerous times was the first to any loose ball and was able to body up a lot of the CPP midfielders.

Over the final ten minutes, the ThunderWolves held the Broncos to no shots to seal the 2-1 victory.

Pack goalkeeper Nils Roth made three saves and gave up one goal in full time in the net.

CSU Pueblo (16-3-2) will continue its run next week and awaits the winner between St. Mary's (TX) and Midwestern State.
