GUNNISON, Colo. (January 7, 2022) - Colorado State University Pueblo junior wrestler
Dominic Robles (Pueblo, Colo.) finished in first place at 184 pounds, finishing 2-0 on the day at the Western Colorado Open leading a strong performance by the ThunderWolves.
CSU Pueblo finished with a pair of second-place finishes and three others placed in the top four in their respective bracket.
Competing in a round-robin style bracket, Robles used a second period pin (4:02) in his opening match against Air Force Prep's Danny Tanefeu. In his second round match against Western Colorado's Jacob Lorenz, Robles won by major decision, 17-4.
At 125 lbs.,
Gabriel Taboa (Fr., Jerome, Idaho) placed second and went 3-1 and earned two first-period pins, the first came against Adams State's Adam Concepcion (1:28) and in his next outing, Taboa bested Western Colorado's Binyam Barila (1:25).
In his third match of the day, Taboa outwrestled his opponent Nick Gonzalez of the Air Force Academy by a 9-4 decision.
In the last match against Air Force's Tucker Owens, Taboa took the loss by fall at 5:15.
In the 133-pound bracket,
Conor Goucher (Fr., Orting, Wash.) placed second and finished with a 4-1 record and earned two tech fall shutout victories. Against Colorado Mesa's Troy Ramirez in the third round, Goucher pinned Ramirez in the first round at 1:41.
During the championship match, Goucher battled and fell to Colorado Mesa's Oran Huff by a score of 10-5.
Placing third at 285 lbs.,
Jayson Davis (So., Pueblo, Colo.) picked up three wins including a first round decision 6-2 against Western Colorado's Jacob Moore en route to a third place finish. In his second match against Colorado Mesa's Raul Martinez, Davis picked up a 17-1 tech fall and in the third match of the day versus Abraham Garcia of Adams State, Davis won by fall (0:23).
In his final match, Davis had to forefeit due to injury.
At 157 lbs.,
Richard Palomar (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) went 2-2 on the day and in his two victories, recorded an 8-2 decision against Dominic Helbok from Adams State. In his second win, Palomar registered a 12-4 major versus Ben Nagel from Colorado Mesa.
In the third place match, Palomar lost by fall (2:12) against Cody Ginther of Western Colorado.
CSU Pueblo's
Zion Freeman (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) finished in fourth place at 197 pounds. Freeman went unbeaten in his first three matches that included a win by fall (2:45) against Luke Allan from New Mexico Highlands and third-round win by fall (6:14) versus Colby Clatterbaugh from Western Colorado.
In the third place match, Freeman dropped a tough battle, 3-2 against Wyatt Hoeppner from Colorado Mesa.
CSU Pueblo will stay in Gunnison and compete at the Tracy Borah Duals.
