Higgins Sets Program Record for ThunderWolves at UNM Open

PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 30) – The Colorado State University Pueblo track & fields squads traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. for their second straight weekend where Katherine Higgins (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) set a new program record in the women's shot put at the University of New Mexico Open on Saturday.
 
Higgins finished 5th place with a mark of 14.79 meters which she threw on her final attempt. Teammate Jenna McKinley (Gr., Mosca, Colo.), who previously owned the program record, finished right behind Higgins in 6th place with a mark of 14.22 meters.
 
Mid-distance runner Yasmine Hernandez (Gr., Johnstown, Colo.) followed last weeks performance with a 3rd place finish in the 800-meter run as she crossed the line in 2:10.26 which is the fourth fastest time in CSU Pueblo program history. Claire Pauley (Jr., Arvada, Colo.) ran a strong race in the 3,000-meter run finishing in 3rd place behind two Adams State Grizzlies with a time of 10:07.38 and sits 25th on the NCAA provisional qualifying list this season.
 
On the men's side, Nate Miller (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Justin Jenks (So., Helena, Mont.) continue to lead Division II in the shot put as Miller and Jenks finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Miller posted a 19.27 meter mark that he threw on his second attempt while Jenks broke 19 meters for the first time in his college career with a mark of 19.05 meters and lands him 8th on the CSU Pueblo Top 10 performance list. Jenks also set a program record in the weight throw with a new PR of 19.04 meters. 
 
Meanwhile, teammate Jack Dickson (Fr.) posted a provisional qualifying time in the 800-meter run with a 3rd place finish and a time of 1:52.83 and sits 21st on the list this season. Kaleb Tipton (Jr., Lawton, Okla.) was close behind in 6th place with a time of 1:55.06.
 
Carl Schmidt (Jr., Wiesbaden, Germany) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and finished 6th overall with a time of 8.14 seconds that places him 4th on the programs top 10 performance list.
 
Finishing off the men's performances was the teams 4x400-meter relay squad who finished bested four NCAA Division I squads with a time of 3:18.00. The relay team consisted of Schmidt, Dickson, Tyrell Smith (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.), and Tipton.
 
The Pack look to keep the momentum rolling as the squads head up to Golden, Colo. Next weekend to compete in the Mines Winter Classic on Friday and Saturday.
