ThunderWolves cruise past SF State 31-12; fall versus Menlo in nightcap

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (January 15, 2022) - The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team continued its dual season Saturday cruising past San Francisco State 31-12 before falling versus Menlo College 34-3 in the nightcap at SFSU's Student Life and Events Center.

In his return home of sorts, Gavin Melendez (R-Sr., Los Banos, Calif.) earned a pair of one-point victories on the day including a hard fought 4-3 victory against SFSU and battling his opponent from Menlo to a 3-2 win.

Against the host SFSU, the ThunderWolves notched seven wins including three wins by fall and two come-from-behind victories to carry the ThunderWolves in the win. CSU Pueblo's Parker McBride (Sr., Duvall, Wash.) started out the match with an impressive 10-1 major decision over his opponent Aria Mazroy.

The ThunderWolves suffered back-to-back losses at the 133 lb. and 141-pound matches, respectively.

At 149 lbs., Melendez defeated SFSU's Basil Othman 4-3 and put three team points on the board.

Trailing 12-7 entering the back end of the match, CSU Pueblo won its final five matches that included three pins all coming in the third period of their respective match.

Justin Davis (R-Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) earned the Pack's first win by fall in the match against SFSU's Aaron Galef in the final seconds of the third period and give the ThunderWolves the lead overall in the match.

Earning the team six more points, Remington Winmill (Fr., Wendell, Idaho) pinned his opponent Kweli Hernandez-Maitre at 6:33.

At 184 lbs., Pueblo-product Dominic Robles (So., Pueblo, Colo.) continued his strong season with an impressive come-from-behind victory, 12-10 against his opponent Hamzah Alsaudi.

In the 197-pound match, CSU Pueblo's Ben Gould (So., Canyon Country, Calif.) earned a win by fall (6:47) versus Callum Bisping.

Rounding out the scoring at 285 lbs., Zion Freeman (R-Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) battled to a 10-7 victory over Tyler Watson and give the ThunderWolves their final points in the match.

Against the Oaks of Melo, the ThunderWolves dropped several close matches including three one-point victories. The lone win for the Pack game at 149 lbs. when Melendez bested his opponent Nicholas Comach, 3-2.

Devin Lueck (R-So., Fountain, Colo.), Davis and Gould all lost in their matches by a single point.

CSU Pueblo will open its first home dual of the season on Wednesday against nationally-ranked Adams State. First match against the Grizzlies is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Massari Arena.
