ThunderWolves Cross Country Places Second and Third at UCCS Rust Buster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 6, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's and women's cross country competed at the UCCS Rust Buster Saturday afternoon with the women placing second and the men finishing third.

On the women's side, Hailey Streff headlined for the Pack, placing second with a time of 18:11.7 in the 5K race. Streff finished second to Layla Almasri from the host school University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The time also marks Streff's personal record in the 5K run.

Not following far behind her teammate, Claire Pauley crossed the line in fourth place with a final time 18:15.6. The 18:15.6 time was Pauley's personal best in the 5K run.

Yasmine Hernandez placed seventh in the distance run with a PR of 18:39.4. Hernandez was the third and final ThunderWolves runner to place in the top 10, scoring a total of 13 points between the three of them. CSU Pueblo and UCCS were the only two teams to rack up three runners in the top 10 of the race.

Placing 14th on the weekend was Margot Thomas-Gatel  in her first race with the Pack. Thomas-Gatel raced her way to a final time of 18:54.4 while logging a 6:-5.1 average mile split. Another freshman placing in the top 25 was Ella Harris. Harris raced into 25th off a 19:36.1 time in her first collegiate race.

Rounding out the scoring runners for the Pack were Delaney Gillfilan and Helen Braybrook, finishing in 37th and 38th, respectively. Gillfillan crossed the line just .4 seconds ahead of her teammate, finishing in 20:09.0. On her heels, Braybrook crossed in 20:09.4.

Halle Schmitz finished off the race for the ThunderWolves as the freshman placed 41st in 20:16.2 for the 5K.

The strong performances by the freshmen clinched second place for the team, only 10 points separated them and the Mountain Lions in the top spot.

For the men's race, Matthew Roberds led the way for the Pack with the sophomore placing 11th in the 8K race off a 26:06.9 time (5:15.2 mile split). Matthew Roberds was followed closely by Richie Roberds who crossed the line in 13th off a 26:15.4 8K PR.

Two more Pack runners followed closely. In 18th, freshman Luke Futey edged out sophomore Patrick Scoggins with a 26:33.4 final time to Scoggins' 26:37.6.

Cole Munoz clinched 25th in the race to mark the fourth Pack runner to reach that feat in the 8K run. Munoz crossed in 27:03.5 to mark a personal best.

Brandon Parrado and Lucas Westbrook were the final scorers for the ThunderWolves, placing 27th and 28th, respectively. Anderson-Parrado crossed his first race as a senior in 27:15.9 while Westbrook finished just over three seconds behind, completing the race in 27:15.9.

Kaleb Beloy finished 35th in 27:36.0 on the afternoon. Kaleb Tipton and Nikolaus Franzmair rounded out the CSU Pueblo efforts in 46th and 47th, respectively. Tipton crossed in 28:14.1 while Franzmair finished in 28:16.3.

The Pack race next at the Ted Castaneda Classic in Colorado Springs on Sept. 11.
