ThunderWolves host Rangers and Orediggers in season finale

PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 25, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo men's basketball concludes the regular season Feb. 26-27 when they host Regis University and No. 7 Colorado School of Mines in a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests. 
 
Friday's game against the Rangers, a rematch of Wednesday's road loss, is set for 6 p.m., while the game Saturday against the nationally-ranked Orediggers is set for 6:30 p.m. 
 
No fans will be allowed at Massari Arena. A free video stream and live stats will be available for both contests. Audio will be available on AM1350 Fox Sports Pueblo, online or on the iHeart app. Play-by-play will come from Jim Brooks, the Voice of the ThunderWolves.  
 
VERSUS THE OPPONENTS
 
• The ThunderWolves (3-13, 3-13 RMAC) lost to the Rangers (5-9, 5-9 RMAC) on Wednesday, 80-69. The Pack are 14-6 against the Rangers since 2005-06.  
 
• The Orediggers (13-1, 12-1 RMAC) have won four straight against the ThunderWolves, which includes an 84-65 win in Pueblo last season. The Pack are 3-7 in the last 10 against Mines. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
 
The ThunderWolves lost its final road game of the season Wednesday with an 80-69 setback at Regis University. 
 
The RMAC game was a tale of two halves, as the ThunderWolves led 34-27 at the half, but gave up 53 points in the second to suffer the defeat. 
 
CSU Pueblo shot 57.7 percent from the field in the first half, but would finish the evening shooting 50 percent. The Rangers shot 42.9 percent in the first half, but in the final 20 minutes produced a 70.8 percentage that equated to a 55.8 field goal percentage for the game. 
 
David Simental led the team with 23 points, as he played all 40 minutes and committed just one turnover. He also dished out three assists. 

Both teams started slow offensively, but the Pack were able to build a seven point lead at 14-7 with 9:14 left in the opening frame. Regis responded and went on an 8-2 run to get within one at 16-15. 
 
The two squads traded buckets for the next couple of minutes, as the ThunderWolves held a 23-21 advantage with 5:29 showing on the game clock. A 7-2 run, capped by a Reed 3-pointer, pushed the Pack lead back to seven at 30-23 and CSU Pueblo remained seven ahead at the break 34-27. 
 
The road team scored just four points during the first six minutes of the second half, which allowed the Rangers to post a 17-4 run to open up a 44-38 advantage. Back-to-back 3-pointers by the Pack momentarily stopped the bleeding and tied the game up at 44-44 with 13:11 remaining. 
 
Regis stormed back and rattled off an 8-0 stretch within a minute and a half of game clock. The ThunderWolves never recovered and would only get within four on two occasions the rest of the way. The Rangers had their first double-digit lead at 66-56 with 4:42 remaining and were able to keep the comfortable lead to the final buzzer. 
 
THE PACK
 
• Junior David Simental leads the team with 19.3 points per game to sit seventh in the RMAC. He is shooting 58.9 percent from the field to rank sixth in the league. His 93.1 percent effort from the free throw line leads the conference. Simental scored 48 points against Westminster (Feb. 13) to establish a program record (previous record was 46 by Damon Williams in 1997). The effort is the most by a member of the RMAC since 2015 and is the second most in NCAA Division II this season. 
 
• Junior Tre Brown is averaging 14.3 points per game. He has five games with 19 or more points. Brown is shooting 86.0 percent from the free throw line. He owns 2.8 assists per game. 
 
• Freshman Lian Ramiro is second in the RMAC with a 2.0 assist/turnover ratio. He guides the team with 45 assists, a 3.2 assists per game average that ranks tied for sixth in the league. Ramiro adds 12.7 points and is second with 3.9 rebounds per game. He totaled a season-high 31 points at Western Colorado (Feb. 19). 
 
• Freshman Tristan Hurdle has a team-best 33 3-pointers, which are 2.1 3-pointers per game that ranks tied for 10th in the RMAC. His 37.1 percent effort from long range is good for ninth in the league. He has 10.1 points per game. 
 
• Senior Alex Reed leads the team with 4.0 rebounds per game. He adds 6.2 points per game.  
 
• In the RMAC, the team is third in free throw shooting (76.0%) and fifth in scoring (77.0 ppg).
 
• Head Coach Matt Hammer is in his second season as head coach. 
 
• CSU Pueblo returned four players from last year's roster, while only three saw the floor. The rest of the 14-player roster is made up of four transfers and seven freshmen.  
 
THE RANGERS
 
• The Rangers are 5-9 overall and in league play this season. Regis has won two straight against Colorado Christian (76-65) and the Pack (80-69). RU is 2-5 on the road.
 
• Regis by far leads the league with a +4.29 turnover margin, while its 8.6 steals per game is also a conference best. The Rangers average 69.1 points per game and allow 71.9 points per contest. 
 
• Brian Dawson leads the team and ranks second in the RMAC with 21.3 points per game. He has 35 3-pointers, which is 2.5 per game to rank tied for sixth in the league. Dawson leads the team and sits third in the league with 1.9 steals per game. 
 
• Will Cranson-Lown adds 14.4 points per game. Troy Brady has produced 9.2 points and a team-best 2.7 assists per game. 
 
THE OREDIGGERS
 
• The No. 7 Orediggers were undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation before suffering a 64-58 home loss to then-No. 7 Colorado Mesa Feb. 20. Mines sits at 13-1 overall and 12-1 in RMAC play. The team owns a 6-0 away record.
 
• Mines leads the league with a +14.4 scoring margin (75.7 points scored, 61.3 points allowed). The Orediggers shoot 50.6 percent from the field (2nd in the league) and allow their opponents to shoot 39.3 percent (1st in the conference). The team also ranks first in the RMAC with 4.57 blocks per game. 
 
• Brendan Sullivan leads the team with 18.8 points per game (8th in RMAC) and is shooting 57.0 percent from the field (8th in the league). He leads the team with 2.1 assists per game and his 1.0 blocks per game is tied for fourth in the conference. 
 
• Three more players average 10 points per game or better. Kobi Betts has 12.2 points and 2.0 assists per game. Michael Glen adds 10.8 points per game and is tied for the rebounding lead with 5.9 boards per contest. Ben Boone has 10.4 points per game.
