Meeks places first in 141-pound bracket at Bob Smith Open; six others finish in top six

HAYS, Kan. (December 12, 2021) - Colorado State University Pueblo freshman wrestler Cyruss Meeks (Casper, Wyo.) went unbeaten and posted a 4-0 record en route to the 141-pound title Sunday at the Bob Smith Open, hosted by Fort Hays State University. Meeks led six others who placed 6th or better in their respective brackets.

Meeks recorded a pair of major victories including a 14-6 major decision in the title bout against Central Oklahoma's Peter Rolle. In his first match of the day, Meeks secured a 14-4 major victory against Cloud County CC's Michael Barfuss.

In his second round match, Meeks earned a 7-2 decision versus Labette CC's Gage Hight and during the semifinal bout, Meeks battled and came away with a big 5-3 decision, earning his spot in the final.

Finishing in second place at 285-pounds and after a bye in the first round, Gavin Nye (R-Jr., Gerber, Calif.) picked up three first-period pins against formidable opponents. In his first match of the day, Nye pinned Barton College's Ayston Perez and he followed that performance with his second pin of the day against Justin McGough who was wrestling unattached. During the semifinal match, Nye made quick work of Fort Hays State's Anthony Caldwell, earning a pin at 0:59 in the first period.

In the title match, Nye fell in the second period against host-FHSU's Aj Cooper.

Wrestling unattached and earning third place at 133-pounds, Eric Griego (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) won his first match of the day, 7-1 against Samuel Blackmon of Northwest Kansas Technical University. Griego dropped a 7-1 match against Air Force Prep's Brenden Barnes in the second round and bounced back with a pair of pins over his next two matches against Samuel Dickey and Drew Liles, both from Pratt CC.

In his fifth match of the day, Griego faced off against teammate Devin Lueck  (R-So., Fountain, Colo.) and the duo grappled closely in a 3-2 victory for Griego. During the third place match, Griego secured the win and came away with another one-point victory, 4-3 over Nebraska-Kearney's Drew Arnold.

Lueck ended his day with a 1-2 record and finished in sixth place after falling 7-3 in the fifth place match against Barnes of Air Force Prep.

Placing fourth at 157-pounds, Justin Davis (R-Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) earned a 20-2 tech fall victory in the second round and dropped a heartbreaker in a 3-2 loss against Anthony Scantlin of Fort Hays State.

At 125-pounds, Dominick Castro (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) pinned his first opponent of the day at 1:25 against Fort Hays State's Colin Cole. In his second outing, Castro dismantled his opponent for a 18-0 tech fall win over Ivan Lazo of Nebraska-Kearney. In his next match, Castro posted a 21-8 major decision to reach the semifinals.

In that outing, Castro fell to Adams State's Isaiah DeLaCerda by tech fall, 15-0 to earn fourth place.

Dominic Robles (So., Pueblo, Colo.) placed sixth at 184 pounds and opened his day with a 20-9 major win against Micah Sterling of Cloud County CC. The second round matchup pitted Robles against Barton College's Jonah Clarke and Robles handled business with a 6-2 decision.

Battling against Nebraska-Kearney's Jacri Deal in the semifinals, Robles fought hard before falling by major decision, 12-2 and ending up on the back side of the bracket. In his fifth place match, Robles dropped a hard fought battle, 8-7 against Corbin Phelps of Hastings College.

CSU Pueblo will go on holiday break and will return to action January 7 at the Western Colorado Open in Gunnison, Colo.
