ThunderWolves historic season comes to an end in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (November 20, 2021) - The No. 24 ranked Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team's historic season came to an end Saturday after the Pack dropped a 2-1 match at No. 6 Cal State LA in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

In a season of firsts for the men's soccer program, earning an NCAA Tournament berth and getting their first win at the National Tournament, tying a program record for most wins in a season and recording a 9-1-1 record at the friendly confines of Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium, the ThunderWolves have a lot to be proud of during a successful season.

"The lads can be so proud of what they accomplished this season," said Pack Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "We went down fighting and showed the great character that we have."

Emil Joensson (Fr., Kristianstad, Sweden) scored his first goal of the season during the 73rd minute to guide the Pack.

In the match CSU Pueblo played toe-to-toe against the Golden Eagles. Both teams totaled 12 shots and the Pack earned five corners against four by Cal State LA.

Vinzent Zingel (So., Aachen, Germany) led the ThunderWolves with three shots. Sam Birch (Fr., Wigan, England), Carlos Sanchis (Grad., Madrid, Spain) and Martin Cardenas (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) each recorded two shots and one landing on goal.

In the first half, the ThunderWolves fired off five shots and earned two corners.

Cal State LA got on the scoreboard during the 40th minute off a free kick and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The home team built a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute.

Pack goalkeeper Garret Wild (Jr., Brownsville, Tex.) made seven saves against 12 shots from the Golden Eagles.

Joensson netted his goal after a corner kick and scramble in front of the net that he finished for the goal.

"Even tonight down 2-0, we showed a champion spirit and kept going until the end," Twelvetrees added. "The seniors have taken this program to new heights and the returners are hungry for more. The support from Dr. Paul Plinske, Director of Athletics, and our athletic department has been incredible and we appreciate all of the support shown for us back at home. We will be back to fight another day."

CSU Pueblo finishes its season with a 15-6-2 record.
