RAPID CITY, SD (October 7, 2021) – No. 24 Colorado State University Pueblo men's soccer team went on the road to the Mount Rushmore State and defeated South Dakota School of Mines & Technology 5-0 Thursday at Dakota Fields in Rapid City, South Dakota.
It is the seventh shutout of the season for the fourth-ranked Pack defense in NCAA Division II.
"Another top performance from the whole team tonight," said Pack Head Coach
Oliver Twelvetrees. "Five different goal scorers plus everyone's defensive effort contributed to another clean sheet."
The ThunderWolves offense jumped out to a fast start and fired three shots in the opening minutes leading to ten first half shots.
CSU Pueblo got on the board in the 16th minute when
Louis Kearns (So., Liverpool, England) took a pass from
Vinzent Zingel (So., Aachen, Germany) and was able to finish for the early 1-0 lead.
The Pack continued to attack on SD Mines side of the field and capitalized in the 41st minute when Zingel was able to create space and fire a shot that went to the back of the net for a two-goal lead at intermission.
Sam Birch (Fr., Wigan, England) was credited with the assist on the play.
At halftime, CSU Pueblo held a 10-4 lead in shots and recorded eight corner kicks in the half against one by the Hardrockers. Zingel recorded five of the Pack's ten shots in the half.
Starting the second half, the ThunderWolves quickly found the net during the 51' when
Lamar Bynum (Fr., Albuquerque, NM) scored his third goal of the year on a pass by
Zach Maguire (So., Centennial, Colo.) and was able to score the ThunderWolves third goal of the match and Bynum's third of the season.
In the 85th minute,
Josua Hall (So., Baiersbronn, Germany) scored his fourth goal of the year for the fourth score of the match. Maguire earned another assist on the play.
During the 87th minute, the ThunderWolves were awarded a penalty kick and it was converted by
Ryan Reed (R-So., Northampton, England, UK) to cap the big scoring night.
The stifling Pack defense kept the Hardrockers silent for much of the second half and faced little pressure by the home team.
At the 60-minute mark, a change at the goalkeeper for the Pack saw
Will Whitworth (Fr.,Gloucester, England) come on and record the final thirty minutes at the net. Whitworth made five saves in relief. Starting Pack goalkeeper
Garret Wild (Jr., Brownsville, Tex.) made two saves in sixty minutes of action.
The Pack finished with 18 shots and eleven landing on goal. CSU Pueblo also totaled ten corners.
Twelvetrees added, "Seven clean sheets in 11 games is something to really be proud of from this group. Both keepers Garret and Will were excellent tonight. We are looking forward to Sunday."
CSU Pueblo (9-2-0, 2-1-0 RMAC) stays on the road for a match Sunday at Regis. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Regis Match Pitch in Denver.
