PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 28, 2021) – The Colorado State University Pueblo wrestling team lost its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and home opener Thursday, as No. T-25 Chadron State College visited Massari Arena and won, 23-16.
CSU Pueblo (2-2, 0-1 RMAC) earned five match victories, but only one bonus point win, as the Eagles (3-3, 1-1 RMAC) used two falls and a technical fall to secure the dual win.
At 149, No. 11
Gavin Melendez (R-Sr., Los Banos, Calif.) was the only wrestler to score bonus points for the ThunderWolves, as he used a first period takedown and four-point near fall to set the tone in a 12-3 major decision win.
Parker McBride (Sr., Duvall, Wash.) got things started for the Pack at 125, as he totaled three takedowns and won by a 10-4 decision.
Justin Davis (R-Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) edged out his opponent at 165 for a 3-2 decision victory. After a scoreless first period, Davis recorded an escape and a takedown in the second period to lead 3-1 after two. He held on in the third to get his first dual win of the season.
Through six bouts both squads had three wins, but the Eagles led 14-10.
Jair Flores (R-Sr., Pueblo, Colo.) gutted out a 5-4 decision win at 184, as he needed the riding time point to secure the close bout win and score three points for the home team.
With the RMAC dual out of reach heading into the heavyweight match,
Gavin Nye (R-Jr., Gerber, Calif.) made sure to keep his overall record perfect, as the eighth-ranked wrestler scored four points in the first period and posted a 7-3 decision win.
CSU Pueblo and Chadron State also wrestled 12 extra matches with both squads winning six bouts.
After suffering defeats in the main dual, both
Andrew Sansburn (So., 141, Denver, Colo.) and
Jasiah Williams(R-Sr., 157, Portland, Ore.) wrestled again and produced falls at 3:40 and 2:19, respectively.
At 174,
Aaron Benton (R-Sr., Yuba City, Calif.) scored six points in the third period to secure at 10-1 major decision win.
Jayson Davis (So., 184, Pueblo, Colo.) also posted a major decision victory, as he used seven first period points, en route to a final score of 13-1.
Finally, heavyweight
Dominick Fini (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) battled to an 8-5 decision win for his first victory with the Pack.
