PUEBLO, Colo. (March 8, 2020) – In their first home game of the season, Colorado State University-Pueblo Men's Lacrosse held on to defeat Davenport University 17-16 Sunday at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.
The win was the Pack's first of the season. They improved to 1-2 on the year. The Panthers fell to 1-5.
Tommy Vassallo (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) netted six goals. This was Vassallo's first sock trick of his career Vassallo matched a program record with his six-goal game. This was the sixth sock trick in program history.
Connor Owen (Fr., Keller, Texas) led the Pack with eight points. Owen totaled two goals and six assists. The six assists matches the second-highest output in program history. Owen's eight points ranks as the fifth-highest total single-game total for CSU-Pueblo.
Logan Wells (Fr., Centennial, Colo.) fired in three goals for the first hat trick of his career. Wells picked up five points thanks to two assists. Wells also had three ground balls.
Skylar Weathers (So., Ogden, Utah) totaled three points with two goals and an assist.
Devin Thrower (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) scored two goals. Thrower also secured six ground balls.
Logan Naves (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and
Trevor Thompson (So., Sacramento, Calif.) each scored one goal, but led the Pack to victory. Naves' goal broke a 15-15 tie, while Thompson's goal would prove to be the difference in a 17-16 Pack win.
Garrett Breeling (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned the win in his first start of the season. Breeling made 16 saves on 32 shots for his second career victory.
Tavian Watson (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) led the Pack defensively with three caused turnovers.
Jacob Muir (So., Ogden, Utah) snagged nine ground balls and won 13-of-25 faceoffs.
The Pack came out on fire, scoring four goals in the first five minutes including two from Vassallo, one from Wells, and one from Owen. The Panthers got on the board over eight minutes into the game to make it 4-1. Owen, Vassallo, and Wells would each score again the Pack led 7-3 after one.
CSU-Pueblo would score the first three goals of the second quarter to build a game-high seven-goal lead. The Pack would carry an 11-4 advantage into the break.
The Panthers responded in the second half, scoring the first five goals to cut the Pack's lead to two. A Vassallo goal ended the Panthers run. The Panthers added one more before the end of the third to make it 12-10.
A three-goal run early in the fourth helped the Panthers tie the game at 14. Vassallo completed the hat trick to put the Pack up 15-14. The Panthers added a man-up goal to knot it up once more at 15.
Naves scored on a rebound to break the tie. With 2:24 left in the game, Thompson scored to put the Pack up 17-15. Davenport netted another goal with 1:06 remaining to close within one.
The Panthers won the ensuing faceoff and took a shot to tie it. However, Breeling turned this show away for a monsterous save that preserved the Pack's win.
CSU-Pueblo's three-game homestand continues Tuesday at 12 p.m. The Pack will face No. 11 Rockhurst University at 12 p.m.
