LAS VEGAS, N.M. (Feb. 6, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team grabbed its second straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Thursday at New Mexico Highlands University by the score of 27-18.
The ThunderWolves used three pin falls to secure the win and improve to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in RMAC duals.
CSU-Pueblo started the evening forfeiting at 125, but a first period pin by No. 11
D'Andre Brumfield (R-Sr., Dallas, Texas) quickly tied the match at 6-6.
At 149,
Jasiah Williams (R-Jr., Portland, Ore.) won in just his second match of the year by posting a takedown in the first sudden victory period. With the score at 6-6, Williams scored the takedown to win 8-6 and move the score to 12-9 in the favor of the Cowboys.
Senior
Isaiah Diggs (Federal Way, Wash.) tied the match at 12-12 when he won his 157 bout by a 10-4 decision. He totaled four takedowns in the match, including two in the first period.
Redshirt-freshman
Elijah Valdez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded his second straight pin at 165 and gave the ThunderWolves a 18-12 lead in the match. After a first period takedown and four-point near fall he scored the pin at 2:05 for six team points.
Brendon Kelley (Jr., Evansville, Ind.) didn't allow a point in his 174 bout, as he won by a 6-0 decision with takedowns in the first and third periods.
Ahead 21-18 with only one match left, heavyweight
Gavin Nye (R-So., Gerber, Calif.) won by fall in the second period. The 12th-ranked wrester nationally was ahead 9-2 before earning the pin at 4:01 and solidifying the match victory for the ThunderWolves.
Up next, the Pack close the home dual season Saturday, Feb. 8 for Senior Night at Massari Arena. CSU-Pueblo hosts Western Colorado University at 6 p.m.
