Pack Wrestling is on the road Thursday, closes home duals Saturday

PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 5, 2020) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team continues Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals Thursday, Feb. 6 on the road at New Mexico Highlands University and then concludes its home schedule Saturday, Feb. 8 by hosting Western Colorado University. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Saturday the ThunderWolves will celebrate two seniors prior to the bout with the Mountaineers. 

THE MATCHUPS
 
The Pack enter the duals with a 3-5 overall record and a 2-2 mark in RMAC action. CSU-Pueblo went 1-1 last weekend in two home duals against No. T-13 Adams State University (L, 26-19) and No. 12 San Francisco State University (W, 38-10). 
 
CSU-Pueblo is receiving votes in the national poll and has two wrestlers ranked in the Jan. 22 edition of the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll. A national qualifier last year, senior D'Andre Brumfield (Dallas, Texas) is ranked No. 11 at 133. He owns a 5-2 record this season. Sophomore heavyweight Gavin Nye (Gerber, Calif.) sits at No. 12 and is 4-0 in RMAC. He has a 12-6 record with five falls. Freshman Ben Gould (Canyon Country, Calif.) went 2-0 at 197 last weekend. 
 
The Cowboys sit at 1-4 overall and 1-3 in RMAC duals this season. NMHU is receiving votes nationally and has one ranked nationally in Jonathan Trujillo. He sits No. 12 at 141. The Cowboys last wrestled on Jan. 25 at University of Nebraska at Kearney and fell by the score of 45-6.  
 
CSU-Pueblo has won three straight home matches against New Mexico Highlands. In those bouts they have only allowed 24 total points. Last year in Massari Arena, the ThunderWolves won 37-6. 
 
The Mountaineers are 10-6 overall in dual action with a 3-1 record against RMAC foes. Western Colorado is 2-4 in road duals this season. Last week the Mountaineers grabbed a 31-21 victory against No. 12 San Francisco State in a neutral site match before coming home against No. 9 Colorado School of Mines and falling, 19-13. Western Colorado is receiving votes nationally with two nationally ranked wrestlers. At 125, Patrick Allis is ranked No. 10 with a 24-6 overall record and a 4-0 mark in conference. Jimmy LaConte is No. 12 at 174 and is 15-10 overall with a 2-1 mark in league. 
 
The ThunderWolves and Mountaineers have split the last two meetings with each squad winning on their home mat. Western Colorado won last year 23-16, while the Pack secured a 31-12 victory in 2018 in Pueblo.  
 
LAST TIME OUT
 
CSU-Pueblo avenged the loss to Adams State and upset No. 12 San Francisco State by the score of 38-10 Saturday in a RMAC bout. 
 
The ThunderWolves totaled five bonus point wins, as they improved to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in RMAC duals. The Gators (7-8, 1-6 RMAC) forfeited two bouts and came away with just one match victory.
 
CSU-Pueblo started the evening forfeiting at 125, but back-to-back major decision victories handed the ThunderWolves an 8-6 lead. 
 
No. 11 D'Andre Brumfield (R-Sr., Dallas, Texas) dominated his match at 133 and won by a score of 16-4. He led 6-1 heading to the third period and then totaled four takedowns in the final two minutes to total seven for the match and earn the major. 
 
At 141, junior Dino Cancellieri (Wayne, N.J.) earned his first victory as a member of the ThunderWolves, as he won by a 10-2 major decision. He also had a strong final period with six points.  
 
Forfeits by SFSU at 149 and 157 guided the Pack to a 20-6 lead heading to the final five matches. Redshirt-freshman Elijah Valdez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added to the lead with a first period pin at 2:01. He had two early takedowns before securing his eighth fall of the season. 
 
Brendon Kelley (Jr., Evansville, Ind.) grabbed a major decision victory at 174 when a ride time point landed him eight points ahead, 12-4. Kelley led 6-2 after the first and 9-2 after the second. He grabbed the major with another takedown in the third. 
 
At 197, freshman Ben Gould (Canyon Country, Calif.) wrestled hard and used a takedown and four-point nearfall in the final minute of the third period to post a 9-2 decision win. 
 
At heavyweight, Gavin Nye (R-So., Gerber, Calif.) racked up 20 points and totaled five takedowns and two four-point nearfalls to record a 20-4 technical fall victory.
