ThunderWolves drop two at No. 13 Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah (February 23, 2020) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Sunday, dropping two games at No. 13 Dixie State. The Pack fell 16-6 (5 inn.) in game one and dropped the nightcap 13-5 (6 inn.).

On the day, Gabby Moreno (Sr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) led at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a double, triple, three runs and three RBIs in the twin bill. Moreno earned one free pass.

Sabrina Felix (Sr., Corona, Calif.) and Marissa Piatt (Jr., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) each slugged their first home runs of the season. Piatt belted a two-run shot during the third inning of game one. Felix hit her blasted her homerun, a solo shot to right in the first inning of game two for the Pack.

Piatt and Alyssa McWilliams (So., Windsor, Colo.) each recorded two hits in the doubleheader.

In game one, the potent Dixie State lineup put up eight runs in their first at bat. In their next time on offense, CSU-Pueblo chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in each of the next three innings.

The Pack got the score within four, trailing 8-4 after two and half innings. The Trailblazers plated six more runs in the half of the third, extending the lead to double digits at 14-4.

Both teams exchanged two runs each during the fifth inning. Dixie State reached the eight-run rule mark after their fourth inning. CSU-Pueblo was retired in order in the fifth, falling 16-6.

In the nightcap, CSU-Pueblo jumped to an early lead thanks to the Felix home run. DSU evened the score in their at bat and erupted for five runs in the second inning and a 6-1 lead.

The ThunderWolves put up two runs in the third frame on extra-base hits from Melissa Torrez (So., Buena Park, Calif.) and Moreno.

The Pack scored single runs in the fifth and sixth inning on RBI-hits from Moreno and Piatt.

The Trailblazers scored six runs in two innings and would score the winning run with two outs in the sixth and a 13-5 Pack defeat.

CSU-Pueblo (0-12, 0-2 RMAC) and Dixie State will finish the series with another twin bill scheduled Monday at 11 a.m. in St. George, Utah.
