Pack Dominates Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invite, Roberts Wins Individual Title

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 6, 2020) –
Colorado State University Pueblo Men's Golf won the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course.  Jamie Roberts claimed the Individual Championship for the ThunderWolves.

The Pack beat their closest competition, Texas A&M University International, by five strokes with a -28 (836). This score was one shot shy of the school record for lowest tournament score (835) set at the 2011 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. The ThunderWolves closed the tournament with a -12 team score in round three. Their team score and  the -12 in round three are both team records for the Pack's home meet. The Pack finished -10 on par fours, 14 strokes better than their closest competition. The ThunderWolves beat their closest RMAC competition by 11 strokes.

Roberts (R-Fr., Kinross, Scotland, UK) conquered the field with a -12 (204). He bested his closest competition by two strokes.  Roberts was a model of consistency during the tournament. He shot a -4 (68) in each round.

Roberts totaled 17 birdies, the most in the field. The freshman had 32 pars and just five bogies. He also finished -7 in par fours. This was four strokes better than anyone else in the field.  Roberts beat his closest RMAC competition by four strokes.

After winning this event each of the last two years, Andrew Ni (Jr., Edinburgh, Scotland, UK) recorded a third top 10 finish at the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational. Ni placed 10th with a -4 (212). He matched Roberts with a -4 (68) in round three. He had +1 (73) in round one and a -1 (71) in round two.  Ni eagled on hole four.

Nathan McCann (Jr., Lurgan Armagh, Ireland) caught fire on day two. McCann posted the Pack's best round of the tournament with a -5 (67) in round three. In his incredible third round, McCann had three birdies and an eagle on hole five. If you include the last five holes of round two, which were played Tuesday, McCann finished -6 with 18 pars. He did not have a single bogey in 23 holes Tuesday. McCann's 33 pars for the tournament led the Pack. He finished in 16th place with a-2 (70, 77, 67 -214).

Clay Kucera (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) shared 16th place with McCann. Kucera wrapped up round two with a -4 (68). He finished + 1 (73) in round one and three. Kucera started strong with a -3 showing through his first eight holes. He was -4 on the back nine of round two.

Matt Millar (Fr., Devon England, UK) carded a -1 (71) in each of the first two rounds. He finished +2 (74) in round three after narrowly missing a couple of close putts. Millar took 25th place in his first collegiate tournament with an even par (216). Kucera and Millar ranked second on the Pack with 11 birdies

Competing as an individual, Sanjay Nithiyalingam (So., Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, UK) posted a +5 (77) in round three. He placed 54th with a + 11 (227).

Sam Barthram (Jr., Weybridge, Surrey, England, UK) led Pack individual golfers with a + 10 (226). The reigning RMAC Academic Golfer of the Year placed 52nd. Barthram shot a + 7 (79) in round three.

The Pack's lone senior, Austin Burgess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed 58th with a +17 (233). Burgess played his way to a +9 (81) in round three.
CSU Pueblo has now won the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational in four of the last five seasons. A ThunderWolf golfer has won  the tournament  in four of the past five seasons.
