ThunderWolves secure an RMAC weekend sweep with 78-74 victory against Regis

PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 4, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team recorded a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home weekend sweep to open 2020, as the ThunderWolves defeated Regis University, 78-74, at Massari Arena Saturday.

The Pack led for 35:23 of game clock and improved to 6-7 overall and 4-3 in RMAC play. The home team shot 52.5 percent from the field and finished with 44 points in the paint. Regis (8-5, 3-4 RMAC) shot just 40 percent from field. The rest of the stat lines shook out about even between the two squads. CSU-Pueblo totaled 13 assists and had six blocks.

Senior Brandon McGhee (G, Oakland, Calif.) was the second half hero, as he scored 13 of his 19 points in the last 20 minutes. He shot 7-for-10 (70%) from the field and added eight assists.

Freshman Jaedon Bowles (F, Aurora, Colo.) was the first half hero and finished the game shooting 7-of-8 (87.5%) from the field and 4-of-5 (80%) from long range for 19 points. He totaled six rebounds.

Senior Jason Anderson (C, Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 10 points, brought down a season-high nine rebounds and added two blocks. Bryce Sanchious (Jr., F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had 10 points and six rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench. He also had two blocks, which included a swat in the final seconds on a shot that would have tied the game.

Senior Donovan Oldham (F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) chipped in six points and seven rebounds.

The Rangers started off with an 8-4 lead, but the Pack recorded a 10-0 run to open a 14-8 lead with 14:51 left. The ThunderWolves never trailed the rest of the game. Both Anderson and Bowles totaled four points in the run.

The home team stretched the lead to 22-12 on a Sanchious layup with 12:09 left in the half. Regis would chip at the lead and tie the game 35-35 with 1:16 remaining in the frame. Bowles scored the final points of the half and the Pack led 37-35 at the break.

The teams traded buckets through the first five minutes of the second half and the contest was tied 49-49 with 14:53 remaining in regulation. The Pack used the next 3:47 to post a 10-1 run to open a 59-50 lead. McGhee totaled six points and Sanchious added four points in the stretch.

The ThunderWolves lead dropped to six before hitting the highest of the night, 11, at 66-55 on a dunk by Ajiing Ajang (Jr., C, Phoenix, Ariz.) with 6:55 left.

CSU-Pueblo led 75-66 with 1:36 remaining, but allowed the Rangers to comeback and cut the Pack advantage to just two, 75-73, with 47 seconds left. RU had a chance to tie with 19 ticks left and a player at the line, but he missed both opportunities. After two missed free throws by the Pack on the other end, Regis had another chance to tie the game, but a massive Sanchious block and a ThunderWolves rebound with nine ticks left led to another foul by the road team with only four seconds left. CSU-Pueblo hit one and after a missed second left no time to complete the comeback in the 78-74 Pack victory.

The ThunderWolves are on the road Jan. 10-11 at Western Colorado University and Colorado Mesa University. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
