PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 30, 2020) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team battled with No. T-13 Adams State University Thursday in the home opener, but lost the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference bout to the Grizzlies, 26-19.

The ThunderWolves dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in RMAC duals, while the Grizzlies improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in league action.

The Pack never led, but were tied 9-9 after four matches, as the home team picked up wins at 197 and heavyweight.

At 197, freshman Ben Gould (Canyon Country, Calif.) earned his first collegiate conference victory when he came away with a 6-1 decision win. After a scoreless first period, he grabbed the first takedown and led 2-1 after two. He started on the bottom to start period three and used a reversal to increase his lead. He rode out his opponent the rest of the way, as a penalty point for stalling and a point for ride time secured the 6-1 decision.

At heavyweight, Gavin Nye (R-So., Gerber, Calif.) recorded his second straight first period pin, as he secured the fall at 2:49. Nye was dominating the bout, as he totaled three takedowns, two four-point nearfalls and a two-point nearfall to open a 16-2 lead before getting the pin.

The Pack forfeited at 125, but the Grizzlies gave it back at 149 and through eight bouts ASU was winning 22-15. In between the forfeits saw a great match between No. 11 D'Andre Brumfield (R-Sr., Dallas, Texas) and No. 5 Jonathan Andreatta at 133. Neither wrestler scored in the first, then both had a lead in the second period. An early third period takedown by Brumfield opened up a 5-2 lead, but an escape and a quick takedown by Andreatta tied the match. The Adams State wrestler didn't allow Brumfield to get off the mat and used his ride time point to win 6-5.

Senior Isaiah Diggs (Federal Way, Wash.) kept the Pack in the bout with an 18-6 major decision victory at 157. He started slow, but a flurry of takedowns in the third period allowed him to post 15 points in that final two minutes to move the dual score to 22-19 heading to the final bout. Diggs had seven takedowns in the match.

Unfortunately, the ThunderWolves couldn't pull out a win at 165 and suffered their second straight RMAC loss.

The Pack will look to return to winning ways Saturday at home against No. 12 San Francisco State University. The 6 p.m. dual is Youth Night at Massari Arena and all youth 17 and under will be admitted for free.
