9/12/2019 11:19:00 PM

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. (September 19, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team was tripped up in their first road contest of the season Thursday, falling 3-2 in overtime at Newman University in Wichita, Kan.

The Pack received scores from Fernando Herrera (Fr., Queretero, Mexico) in the 51st minute and a late game-tying goal by Carlos Espinoza (Jr., Simi Valley, Calif.) with about 1:21 left in regulation to send the match into overtime, the first of the season for the ThunderWolves.

The teams played to a scoreless tie through halftime. Starting the second half, it was the quick offensive possession taken by the ThunderWolves to control the ball in Jets territory that set up Marvin Zajonz (Jr., Reutlingen, Germany) to send in the ball from the right side to the center of the box and Herrera booted it right past the falling goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

Newman evened the match ten minutes later and took a one goal lead midway through the second period.

Trailing 2-1 in the waning minutes, the Pack came together and created a scoring chance after drawing a foul from about 25 yards away from goal that Espinoza calmly stepped up and found the back of the net with under ninety ticks remaining in the second half.

In the overtime, Newman gained control and kept possession in their offensive side and swift ball movement created the home team a good look that they took advantage of.

"Our guys played well tonight in a challenging environment," said Pack Head Coach Roy Stanley. "I thought we handled the environment well and have made strides in improving from just a week ago."

CSU-Pueblo (0-3) will finish its nonconference schedule Saturday against their third ranked opponent in four games when they travel and face No. 21 Rogers State. Kickoff against the Hillcats is set for 6 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
