Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (May 2, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team's season came to an end on day one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday after losses to No. 11 Colorado Mesa University and MSU Denver at CMU Softball Field.
The Pack fell 11-2 in five innings against Mesa and was shutout 5-0 against the Roadrunners of MSUD in an elimination game. The ThunderWolves end their season with a 14-30 record.
The bats were held quiet in both contests for the Pack, who posted seven hits in game one and one hit in the nightcap.
Gabby Moreno (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) sparked the offense with three hits on the day. Moreno hit an RBI-double in the third inning against tournament-host CMU to get the Pack on the board.
In the fifth inning,
Melissa Torrez (Fr., Buena Park, Calif.) hit a single up the middle to score the second run for CSU-Pueblo.
Marissa Piatt (So., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) went 2-for-3 at the dish against the Mavericks.
The Mavericks scored three and two runs in each of four innings to put the game out of reach by the fifth inning. In the fifth, the home team slugged a walkoff homerun and sealed the run-rule victory.
In the circle,
Hannah Anderson (R-Jr., Spokane, Wash.) was tagged for four runs, all earned and two walks before
Taylor Strupp (Fr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) came on in relief. Strupp allowed seven runs, five earned and gave up six walks in 3.2 innings pitched.
Later in the night and in an elimination contest, CSU-Pueblo was held without a hit against MSU Denver pitcher Darby McGhee until the fourth inning when Moreno hit a laser on the infield to get on base.
In the inning, the ThunderWolves got Moreno into scoring position and another runner on first before a groundout eliminated any scoring chance for the Pack.
Pitcher
Samantha Riesen (Jr., Independence, Calif.) did all she could to keep the Pack afloat. She tossed six innings and gave up five runs on five hits and two walks.
For a third straight year, Moreno recorded at least 50 hits in a season.
Ending her Pack career,
Michaela Burpee (Sr., Union City, Calif.) lands among the program's best all-time. Burpee finishes tied for second in doubles (37) and homeruns (32). She stands alone in third in RBIs (128) and total bases (331).
She is now eighth all-time in hits (187), at-bats (527), is ninth in slugging (.628) and sits 14th all-time in runs (98) and career average with a .355 clip.Â
