PUEBLO, Colo. (April 9, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis battled hard to defeat state rivals Colorado Mesa University, 4-3, Saturday at East High School.
The Pack bounced back immediately from their 4-3 defeat to Metropolitan State University of Denver Wednesday to come out and fight for their program's third win of the season.
It was back-to-back wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles position when the British partnership of
Richard Garcia (Fr., Surrey, UK) and
Edward Cooper (Fr., Bolton, UK) won, 6-4. Seniors
James Ryan (Rustington, Sussex, UK) and
Dante Alcala (Pueblo, Colo.) dominated their opponents, 6-2, resulting in the Pack winning the doubles point for a second match in a row.
Cooper was the first to secure a singles win in the top four singles play, as he won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Junior
Daniel Garcia (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) and Ryan couldn't find a win at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots, respectfully.
Ogulcan Deniz (Sr., Istanbul, Turkey) fought hard at No. 2Â and secured a three set victory (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) to put the ThunderWolves up, 3-2. The opening set in R. Garcia's match could have gone either way but the Mavericks came out on top tying the match at 3-3. A Pueblo native, Alcala played cool, calm and collective tennis when he was the last man standing to clinch the match, which he did in confident fashion 6-4, 6-4.Â
The ThunderWolves return to Pueblo City Park Saturday for Senior Day and their final home match this season against MSU Denver.
