AZUSA, Calif. (April 19, 2019) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's track and field squads combined for six NCAA provisional times at the 2019 Bryan Clay Invitational at Cougar Stadium in Azusa, California Thursday and Friday.
A record number of more than 4,800 entries were submitted for the three-day event that featured all divisions of collegiate programs and professional runners.
Starting with the women, sophomore
Yasmine Hernandez (Johnstown, Colo.) nearly posted an NCAA automatic time when she raced to the finish line in 2:08.72 in the 800m run. Her personal best and NCAA provisional time won her heat and ranked 23rd in the field of 120 runners. The NCAA auto mark is 2:07.15.
Also recording an NCAA provisional time and recording a personal record was sophomore
Hailey Streff (Madison, S.D.) in the 1500m run. Her time of 4:28.45 placed her 77th in a field of 143 participants and shaved 11 seconds off her previous best time set two weekends ago in Boulder, Colorado.
Junior
Marcelo Laguera (Chihuahua, Mexico) got things going for the men on Thursday when he raced to an NCAA provisional time of 14:08.87 in the 5000m run to place second in his heat and fourth among Division II athletes competing. He cut off about 23 seconds of his season best time that ranked second in NCAA Division II entering this week.
Junior
Dylan Day (Fountain, Colo.) ran the 5000m race in 14:51.04 for finish seventh in his heat.
Laguera just missed a provisional mark in the 1500m Friday when he raced to 3:52.54 in the open section of the race to place 20th of 152 participants.
The 4x400m relay team posted a season-best time of 3:12.41 to record an NCAA provisional mark and finish third in a field of 18 squads. The group was made up of
Jordan Whitley (Colorado Springs, Colo.),
Devundrick Walker (Sr., Aurora, Colo.),
Shawn Horne (Sr., Camp Casey, South Korea) and
Thomas Staines (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Staines ran in the fastest heat of the 400m dash and recorded an NCAA provisional time of 47.57 to finish 11th of 98 runners.
Walker posted an NCAA provisional time in the 800m run with a season-best time of 149.47. He was third in his heat and 19th overall in a field of 154 runners.
Patrick Scoggins (Rangely, Colo.) also ran the race and placed 84th with a time of 1:53.74, which is an outdoor personal best for the freshman.
Senior
Tevin Donnell (Fountain, Colo.) placed 40th of 89 participants in the 200m dash with his time of 22.0. He ran the 100m dash in 10.94 to finish 65th of 108 runners.
Thursday, sophomore
Nicole Bouma (Kalispell, Mont.) raced to a time of 17:53.46 in the 5000m to finish 25th in her heat. Friday she posted a time of 4:37.10 in the open section of the 1500m run to place 26th of 160 athletes.
Senior
Tatianna Clanton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ran to 40th in the 200m dash with her time of 24.73. A total of 135 runners were in the event. Junior
Lauren Fairchild (McKinney, Texas) was 59th when she crossed the finish line in 25.02.
In the long jump, Clanton posted a leap of 5.66m (18' 7") to finish eighth in her flight.
The ThundeWolves were competing as a split squad this week, as a group will compete at the Nature's Bakery Invite Saturday, hosted by Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. Events get underway at 10 a.m. for field events and 11 a.m. on the track. This week's competition was the final tune-up for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, set for April 26-28 in Rapid City, S.D. and hosted by South Dakota Mines.
