4/14/2019 9:17:00 PM

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 14, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team finished its pod series against No. 12 Colorado Mesa and Regis going 1-3 over the weekend at CMU Softball Field in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Pack was led by Michaela Burpee (Sr., Union City, Calif.) and Gabby Moreno (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) who finished the weekend with six hits apiece.

In the circle, Taylor Strupp (Fr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) went 1-1 and she picked up the win in the first game Saturday against Regis.

In the weekend opener, Strupp tossed 5.0 innings and allowed just three hits to the Rangers and finished with a new season-high six strikeouts.

The Pack offense set a new program record as they tallied 22 hits, the most by a ThunderWolves team since March 5, 2014 when they put up 20 hits at Colorado School of Mines.

CSU-Pueblo had four players record at least three hits in the game guided by Moreno going 4-for-4 at the plate and two runs scored.

Sabrina Felix (Jr., Corona, Calif.), Morgan Hatfield (Sr., Upland, Calif.), and Jordan Sheard (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.) each smacked three hits.

The Pack put up two four-run innings, the first coming in the first at-bat on seven hits in the frame. The next four-run outburst came in the fourth inning when the ThunderWolves collected six hits highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Burpee.

Strupp retired the side in order in each of the fourth and fifth innings to close out the 10-2 run-rule Pack victory.

In the first game against No. 12 Mesa, the Pack's Samantha Riesen  (Sr., Independence, Calif.) did her part in keeping the potent Maverick offense in check. Riesen held CMU scoreless through three innings.

The Pack's best chance at taking an early lead against CMU's McKenzie Surface who entered the game with an unblemished 13-0 record, came in the second when Burpee tripled with one out but was left stranded.

In the home half of the fourth and the score still knotted at zero, Riesen and the ThunderWolves quickly put two in the mud before the Mavericks erupted and scored four runs on four hits.

Riesen was pulled after allowing three runs to score and was replaced by Hannah Anderson (R-Jr., Spokane, Wash.) who gave up one run before inducing a flyball out to get back on offense.

The ThunderWolves got another runner in scoring position with one out and two strikeouts ended any threat.

CSU-Pueblo avoided the shutout and scored its first run in the last at-bat on a RBI-single by Melissa Torrez (Fr., Buena Park, Calif.) and bring the score where it would end at 4-1 in favor of the Mavericks.

Sunday the ThunderWolves opened the day against CMU and was pitted against Kimbri Herring who sits in a tie for second in the RMAC in wins this season with a 15-3 mark.

The Pack jumped to an early 2-0 after their first at-bat when Marissa Piatt (So., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) hit a moonshot to straight-away centerfield.

After the first CSU-Pueblo was held to two hits, however they still manufactured baserunners and left four on base the remainder of the game.

The Mavericks evened the score in the third and took the lead in the fourth inning when four runs crossed on two hits and an error for a 6-2 lead.

In the circle, the ThunderWolves used three pitchers to go against the Mavericks.

The weekend finale against Regis, the Pack needed one-time through the lineup until they recorded their first hit. Felix and Burpee each hit RBI-singles in the frame to put the Pack on top.

Regis took the lead in their next at-bat and did not look back. The Rangers put up ten runs over three innings and got eleven hits in that span to take a commanding lead.

The Pack managed three hits over the next two innings before Regis plated three runs including the game-winner of a 10-2 run-rule win.

Anderson was tabbed with the loss and falls to 1-4 on the season.

CSU-Pueblo (10-24, 9-21 RMAC) returns home for the final homestand of the season and will host a pod style series against Chadron State and Fort Lewis. Since it is Easter Week, games will be played Friday and Saturday at Rawlings Softball Complex.
