Pueblo, Colo. (March. 29, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women's tennis teams are home March 29-30 for a pair of nonconference matches. The ThunderWolves start at 12 p.m. Friday at Pueblo City Park against Seward Community College. The Pack will then have play their second home match of the weekend Saturday versus Hastings College beginning at 10 a.m.
The men's tennis program is currently sitting at a spring record of 2-11. The Pack's extremely competitive schedule meant they began their season with a five game away schedule against NCAA Division I colleges such as Air Force, Denver University, Abilene Christian, Southern Utah and University Northern Colorado. The Pack were not disgraced in any of these tough matches, but come up short.
The program made some recent program history when they beat Western New Mexico on the road to secure a 4-3 victory. In that same weekend, the nail biting clinch could have gone either way when the Pack lost 4-3 against Texas-Permian Basin. The season so far has been close in many of their matches and luck hasn't swayed for the ThunderWolves when the team has needed it. Nerveless, the men's program continues to work hard preparing for their upcoming opponents this weekend.
The Pack women are 1-13 this season with their first win coming last weekend in a 5-2 victory against New Mexico Military Institute. The ThunderWolves took the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 by identical scores of 6-3. The top group was made up of senior
Nia Matthews (Houston, Texas) and sophomore
Kali Hamilton (Grapevine, Texas), while the No. 2 group was junior
Sarah Megilligan (Pueblo West, Colo.) and sophomore
Emily Sproston (Warrington, UK).
Katherine Ambrose (Fr., Bradford Woods, Pa.) earned a straight set win, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. At No. 4 singles, Megilligan won her first set 6-1, then got the win in the second set when her opponent was forced to forfeit due to injury.
Hamilton won at No 2 singles in three sets. She took the opener 6-1, but fell in set two 4-6. A dominating 6-1 win in the third set sealed the victory. Finally, at the No. 3 spot, Sporston lost the first set 4-6, but battled back to win 6-0 in the second and 7-5 in the third.
