Late game rallies fall short for Pack in home pod DH; Weather cancels Saturday games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (March 2, 2019) - Colorado State University-Pueblo softball opened the home portion of its schedule this week and hosted Black Hills State and Regis University to Rawlings Softball Complex. The Pack fell 10-7 against Regis in the first game and had a late-game rally fall short in a 8-7 defeat versus Black Hills State.

The ThunderWolves' offense came alive from the onset. As a team, the Pack collected 25 hits and had six players record three hits each in the two games.

Senior catcher Michaela Burpee (Union City, Calif.) blasted her second homerun of the season and gathered four RBIs.

Third baseman Isabel Griego (Fr., Loveland, Colo.) finished the day with three runs scored and a walk.

In game one, the ThunderWolves were the designated away team and they quickly jumped to a 3-0 lead against Regis in the top of the second inning. The bottom of the Pack lineup sparked the offense when Jordan Sheard (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.), Griego, and Rachel White-Duran (Jr., Bernalillo, NM) got on base and would come around to score.

The Pack carried the three-run advantage into the bottom of the fourth and would surrender the lead when Regis scored seven runs on six hits. The big blow came on a grand slam hit by RU's Michelle Larose.

CSU-Pueblo had one last fight in them in their final at bat. Trailing 10-3, the 8-9-1 hitters in the lineup again hit singles and scored a run, setting up Burpee to come to the plate with two runners on and she blasted a shot that hit and bounced off the scoreboard to bring the Pack within three.

The next batter reached base but two flyouts ended any further damage and resulted in the 10-7 Rangers win.

In game two of the day and first against Black Hills, the ThunderWolves were against designated as the away team on the scoreboard quickly jumped ahead 1-0 after the first at bat when the two-hole hitter Gabby Moreno (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) earned a walk and would come around to score two batters later on a double hit by Sabrina Felix (Jr., Corona, Calif.).

BHSU evened the score in the second inning and used a six-run third inning to find themselves ahead 7-1 after three complete.

The ThunderWolves chipped away at that lead and scored a pair of runs in the fourth on three hits and taking advantage of two passed balls in the inning. Moreno tallied an RBI after patience at the plate with the bases loaded forced in another Pack run.

The Yellow Jackets got one run back in their next at bat and would hold a 8-3 lead going to the seventh.

The ThunderWolves smacked five hits and against took advantage of a defensive miscue in the inning. After a quick out to start the frame, four consecutive hits from the heart of the lineup led to Alyssa McWilliams (Fr., Windsor, Colo.) hitting an RBI-single on the infield. A defensive error in the next at bat added another score in favor of the Pack.

The Pack got the tying run to third base with two outs and a groundout on the infield ended the game and an 8-7 Black Hills State win.

CSU-Pueblo (1-9, 0-6 RMAC) stays home next week and will entertain RMAC-newcomer Dixie State in a four-game series. The teams will play two doubleheaders beginning Saturday at 12 p.m. at Rawlings Softball Complex.
