Bid for RMAC title falls short in 23-16 loss to No. 14 Mountaineers

PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 8, 2019) – The No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team's bid for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship came up short Friday with a 23-16 loss at No. 14 Western Colorado University. 
 
The ThunderWolves needed a win for a share of the conference title, but the loss bumped their RMAC dual record to 5-2. The squad finished the dual season with an 11-5 record.
 
After a sudden victory loss at 125, the Pack took a 4-3 lead when No. 2 D'Andre Brumfield (R-Jr., Dallas, Texas) recorded a 17-6 major decision win at 133. He finished the RMAC dual season with a 6-0 record and finished with a 14-1 dual record.
 
Losses at 141 and 149 had the ThunderWolves trailing 10-3, which would move to 10-6 after a win at 157 by Isaiah Diggs (R-Jr., Federal, Wash.). He edged out an 8-7 win with a riding time point proving to be the difference. He finished with an 8-5 dual record, which included going a perfect 7-0 against RMAC-foes.
 
Losses at 165, 174 and 184 clinched the dual win for the Mountaineers (12-4, 4-1 RMAC). Senior Zane Zeman (Sr., Avon, Ohio) wrestled with No. 1 Brandon Supernaw at 174, as the two were tied 3-3 in the third period before the top-ranked wrestler was able to score 11 total points in the final period for a 14-4 major decision win.
 
Haszell West (R-Jr., Portland, Ore.) will head to regionals in two weeks with a perfect 18-0 record. He produced a 7-1 decision win and finished the RMAC season 7-0.
 
Heavyweight Gavin Nye (R-Fr., Gerber, Calif.) closed the dual with a third period pin at 6:17. He owns seven falls this season and went 11-3 in dual competition.
 
Now the attention turns to the NCAA West Region Championships, set for Feb. 22-23 in Kearney, Nebraska.
