Men's basketball welcomes BHSU and SD Mines

PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 8, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team wraps a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference homestand Feb. 8-9 with Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Both games are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.

LAST TIME OUT

• CSU-Pueblo is 6-15 with a 4-11 RMAC record. The Pack snapped a six-game losing streak Saturday with an 86-78 victory against UCCS. The night before, the ThunderWolves never led in a 90-67 loss to then-No. 16 Mines. 

• Mines shot 53 percent from the field, while holding the Pack to 38 percent. CSU-Pueblo knocked down 14 3-pointers and went 14-for-32 (44%) from long range. CSU-Pueblo was just 3-for-11 (27%) from the line, while the Orediggers went 16-for-18 for an 89 percent effort. Mines won the rebounding battle 46-27, which included nine offensive rebounds for 14 second chance points. The Pack pulled down seven offensive boards, but couldn't capitalize for any points. The road team also won the paint 46-18.

• Jordan Phillips (R-So., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned a start and led the team with 15 points on a 5-for-7 (71.4%) effort from long range. He added two rebounds while playing in just 17 minutes. 

• Against the Mountain Lions, Phillips dropped 24 points with 17 coming in the second half, as he went 9-for-14 (64.3%) from the field and hit five 3-pointers, going 5-for-7 (71.4%). He also added six rebounds, a steal and an assist in 32 minutes. 
 
• The ThunderWolves ended a six-game losing streak with the win, while the Mountain Lions had their losing skid extended to four. The Pack shot 50.8 percent from the field to eclipse the 50 percent mark for the fifth time this season. CSU-Pueblo was also 50 percent from long range, hitting on 12 of 24 from beyond the arc. 
 
• The Pack capitalized on 13 UCCS turnovers and scored 20 points. The Mountain Lions won the rebounding battle 47-35, which included 17 offensive rebounds to total 18 second chance points. The ThunderWolves won the paint 38-26 and scored more points off the bench, 28-19. 
 
• Three other Pack players scored in double-figures, as senior Gavin Liggett (G, Limon, Colo.) came off the bench and provided a spark from beyond the arc with four 3-pointers and a total of 14 points. He was 5-for-6 (83.3%) from the field and 4-of-5 (80%) from 3-point land. 
 
• Donovan Oldham (R-Jr., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 13 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists. Center Jason Anderson(R-Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) totaled 11 points with five assists. 
 
• Freshman point guard Tyson Gilbert (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) filled the stat sheet with six points, a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. 

THE PACK

• The Pack are 3-5 at home this season. 

• CSU-Pueblo is fourth in the RMAC in total rebounds with 744.

• CSU-Pueblo owns 3.3 blocks per game to rank fourth in the league, while its 69 total blocks is also fourth. 

• The ThunderWolves have knocked down 9.4 3-pointers per game (198 total is tied for third) this season to sit fourth in the conference. The squad is fifth in 3-point percentage at 37.4 percent. On the defensive end, the team is fifth in 3-point percentage defense, allowing 35.6 percent. 

• The Pack are scoring 75.7 points per game, but allowing 81.6 points per contest this season. 

• Redshirt-junior Donovan Oldham leads the team with 13.5 points per game. His 85.8 percent shooting from the charity stripe is good for fifth in the conference. He went 12-for-12 from the line against Arkansas-Fort Smith to tie for first in the league with the most free throws made while posting a perfect percentage.

• Redshirt-junior Jason Anderson is second on the team with 10.5 points per game. He is shooting at a 55.8 percent clip this season. His 5.1 rebounds per game is a team best.

• Redshirt-senior Gavin Liggett has dropped a team-best 44 3-pointers to rank tied for 10th in the RMAC. He's tied for ninth in 3-point field goals per game with 2.1. He attempted 17 3-pointers at Westminster to have the second most attempts in a game by a member of the RMAC this season. He hit eight of those 17 attempts. 

• Junior Harvey Barr has 18 blocks this season to rank tied for 10th in the conference (0.9 rpg). His five blocks against Dixie State ranks tied for the most by an RMAC player this season.

• Freshman Tyson Gilbert dished out 10 assists at Dixie State to post the second most assists in a game by a member of the RMAC this season. He leads the team with 2.3 assists per game.

• Sophomore Corey Seng recorded three straight double-doubles from Dec. 14-Jan. 4. In those three games he averaged 13 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, while shooting 48.3 percent from the field. He pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds against Colorado Christian, while his 17 points against Westminster was just shy of a career-high (18 points last season). 

• Head Coach Ralph Turner is in his eighth season as bench boss of the Pack and owns a 115-100 (.535) overall record. He coached his 200th game as a member of the ThunderWolves Nov. 24 against Lubbock Christian.

THE YELLOW JACKETS

• The Yellow Jackets are 11-8 overall with a 10-5 RMAC record to sit tied for third in the RMAC standings. After starting the conference season 6-0, BHSU lost five straight, but have now won four in a row (all at home). Last weekend BHSU defeated Chadron State (82-62) and MSU Devner (64-62). The Yellow Jackets are 5-6 on the road this season.

• Black Hills State is averaging 73.6 points per game and allowing 71.3 points per contest, which is fourth in the RMAC.

• BHSU is tied for first in the conference with a 76.1 percentage from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets are third in the RAMC with 9.5 3-pointers per game. 

• The Yellow Jackets have committed the fewest fouls (323) in the league this season and are tied for fourth in fewest turnovers (265).

• Fraser Malcolm leads the team and ranks eighth in the RMAC with 17.1 points per game and sits fourth in the league with a 53.2 field goal percentage. Dez Stoudamire adds 12.2 points per game and is fifth in the league with 2.7 3-pointers per game. He is sixth in the conference with a 34.0 percentage from long range.

• Tyler Oliver owns 10.6 points per game and leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per contest. Antonio Capley has come off the bench to lead the team with 1.1 blocks per game to sit sixth in the RMAC (20 total blocks).

THE HARDROCKERS

• The Hardrockers are 10-13 overall with a 7-8 RMAC record to sit tied for ninth. South Dakota Mines is 2-8 on the road this season. The Hardrockers are coming off a home weekend sweep of MSU Denver (70-67) and Chadron State (80-59).

• SDM&T is first in the league in the fewest fouls per game category with 16.7 per contest. The team ranks fifth in assist per game at 14.2 dimes per contest. The Hardrockers are fifth in assist/turnover ratio at 1.04. 

• South Dakota Mines is scoring a league-worst 68.7 points per game, but rank second in the conference with 69.7 points per game allowed. 

• The team sits fifth in the league in field goal percentage (46.1%) and are third in field goal percentage defense (43.3%). 

• Mitchell Sueker leads the team with 13.7 points per game, while Alec Williams is second with 13.0 points per game. Williams also has a team-best 3.7 assists per contest (T-5th in the league). His 1.35 assist/turnover ratio is seventh in the RMAC. Logan Elers owns 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Damani Hayes leads the squad with 6.4 rebounds per game.

LOOKING AHEAD

• The ThunderWolves close the road portion of their schedule Feb. 15-16 at UCCS and nationally-ranked Mines.
