PUEBLO, Colo. (Feb. 7, 2019) – The No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team defeated Colorado Mesa University 25-18 Thursday in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual at Massari Arena. The contest was the final home dual for the ThunderWolves and served as Senior Day for four student-athletes.
Â
The Pack improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in RMAC duals to come one match closer to a conference title. Friday, CSU-Pueblo will travel to Western Colorado University for a 7 p.m. dual. A win would secure a share of the RMAC Championship, which would be the program's eighth overall and second in the last three years.Â
Â
Against the Mavericks (8-9, 2-4 RMAC), the home team totaled six bout victories, which included four bonus point wins.Â
Â
Just minutes after being recognized in a pre-match ceremony, senior
Josiah Seaton (Bonner Springs, Kan.) got things started at 125 with a second period pin at 3:49 to improve to 4-1 against RMAC foes.Â
Â
The Pack lead went to 9-0 when No. 2
D'Andre Brumfield (R-Jr., Dallas, Texas) earned a 13-6 decision win at 133. He is now 5-0 in RMAC duals.Â
Â
A two-point loss, then a one-point setback at 141 and 149, respectfully, had the score at 9-6, but
Isaiah Diggs (R-Jr., Federal, Wash.) brought energy to the 157 bout and totaled 10 takedowns in a 23-8 technical fall. He moved to 6-0 in RMAC dual competition. At the midway point the score read 14-6 in favor of the home team.Â
Â
At 165,
Zane Zeman (Sr., Avon, Ohio) gutted out an 8-7 decision win. A quick first period takedown and four-point near fall had the senior ahead 6-0 early, but he had to wrestle to the final buzzer against the experienced national qualifier Jason Buhr.Â
Â
Back-to-back pins by the Mavericks changed the dynamic of the bout, as the ThunderWolves' 17-6 lead went to an 18-17 deficit with two matches remaining.Â
Â
Ranked No. 5 nationally at 197,
Haszell West continued his unbeaten season (17-0, 6-0 RMAC) with a 10-2 major decision to move the lead back to the Pack at 21-18.Â
Â
Needing a win to secure the team victory, heavyweight
Gavin Nye (R-Fr., Gerber, Calif.) muscled his way to an 18-6 victory where he totaled six takedowns.Â
Â
In addition to Seaton and Zeman, senior
PT Garcia (141, Denver, Colo.) and
Preston Lauterbach (174, Bellevue, Neb.) were honored before the dual.Â
Â
Also recognized was Brumfield, as the 2018-19 Grant Family Integrity Award winner, which is given annually to a member of the wrestling program who exemplifies integrity, dedication and honesty.Â
