ThunderWolves drop two games Friday at Courtyard Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PUEBLO, Colo. (February 11, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team dropped its final two games at the Courtyard Classic on Friday. The Pack fell 4-3 (9 inn.) against Hawai'i Pacific University and lost 13-9 against Cal State East Bay. Saturday's game against Western Washington was canceled due to unplayable field conditions.

Against the Sharks from Hawai'i Pacific, the teams played to a scoreless tie through seven innings as both teams combined for eleven hits up to that point. In the first extra inning game of the season, HPU scored two runs in the top half of the eighth on a pair of singles to put the visitors up 2-0.

The ThunderWolves responded in their half, hitting two sacrifice outs that resulted in two runs in the inning.

HPU put up two more runs in the next inning on a double hit down the line with two outs to put them ahead 4-2.

CSU-Pueblo would score the runner that was placed on second base to start the inning on a single by Sabrina Felix (Jr., Corona, Calif.).

Following a line-out in the next at bat, a single and a walk loaded the bases with one out. A line out to left field and groundout on the field ended the game and scoring chance for the Pack.

Pack pitcher Taylor Strupp (Fr., San Tan Valley, Ariz.) was tabbed with the loss and drops to 0-2 on the year.

In the second game of the day against Cal State East Bay, the ThunderWolves scored two runs in their first at bat on a double by Michaela Burpee (Sr., Union City, Calif.) and a wild pitch later in the inning.

CSEB cut the lead in half in their first time at the plate and jumped to a 5-2 lead by the end of the fourth inning.

The ThunderWolves evened the score in the fifth on a three-run homerun hit by Marissa Piatt (So., San Luis Obispo, Calif.). Later in the same inning, Pack newcomer Hailey Hicks (Jr., Meridian, Idaho) hit her first bomb of the season and as a member of the Pack, a two-run shot to put the Pack ahead 7-5.

CSU-Pueblo tacked on two more runs in the next inning on the third homerun of the game for the ThunderWolves off the bat of Jordan Sheard (Sr., Broomfield, Colo.), a solo shot, coupled with a wild pitch allowed Rachel White-Duran (Jr., Bernalillo, NM) to score and the Pack went up 9-5.

In the home half of the sixth, the Pioneers erupted for eight runs on eight hits and capitalizing on two defensive errors and by the time the dust settled CSEB led 13-9.

The last stitch effort in the seventh came up short for the ThunderWolves as they were retired after getting one runner on base.

Strupp takes the loss after coming on in relief during the fifth inning and drops to 0-3 on the season.

CSU-Pueblo (1-3) is off this week and will begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on the road at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Feb. 23-24.
