INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 15, 2019) – The No. 21 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team closed the 41st Annual Midwest Classic Sunday in Indianapolis and finished 22nd.
The Pack failed to add to their point total from Saturday and finished with 29.5 points to move from tied for 17th to 22nd. A total of 37 NCAA Division II teams participated in the tournament, as the Pack made their first appearance at the Midwest Classic.
At 174, junior
Brendon Kelley (Evansville, Ind.) entered the day on the championship side of the bracket after a 3-0 Saturday, but a 0-3 performance forced him to finish sixth. He was the only placer for the Pack at the tournament. He lost the semifinal 8-2 to the No. 5 wrestler in Division II. He fell in the consolation semifinal by an 8-6 decision and then lost the fifth place bout by fall in the third period at 5:37.
Junior
Ruben Garcia (Selma, Calif.) finished the tournament 3-2 at 157. He fell in his lone match of the day by just one point in a 9-8 decision.
Sophomore
Elijah Valdez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) closed the weekend with a 4-2 record at 165. He suffered an injury just 16 seconds into the match and was forced to end the match by injury default.
Heavyweight
Gavin Nye (R-So., Gerber, Calif.) closed the Midwest Classic with a 2-2 record. He lost by a 9-5 decision in his only match of the day.
The ThunderWolves will break for the holiday and return to action Jan. 10 at the Western Colorado University Open in Gunnison, Colorado. On Jan. 11, the Pack will then have three duals at the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison.
