PUEBLO, Colo. (Dec. 13, 2019) – There's no place like home. Five weeks between home games, the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team returned to Massari Arena and recorded an 84-75 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory against Westminster College.
The ThunderWolves (4-5, 2-1 RMAC) shot 53.4 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from long range in the victory, while the Griffins (7-3, 2-2 RMAC) shot 49.3 percent from the field and just 27.3 percent from long range. The Pack got it done on the glass with a 34-30 advantage. CSU-Pueblo dished out 13 assists and had four steals. The home team led for 36 minutes of game clock.
Reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week,
David Simental (R-So., G, Pueblo West, Colo.) led a group of five players in double figures with 23 points. He also added four rebounds and a four assists in 38 minutes.
Senior
Donovan Oldham (F., Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 15 points, as he went 5-for-8 (62.5%) from long range. Sophomore
Tyson Gilbert (G, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) scored 12 points in 17 minutes and added five rebounds.
Junior
Bryce Sanchious (F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 11 points and four rebounds, while guard
Brandon McGhee (Sr., Oakland, Calif.) came off the bench to add 10 points and a game-high six assists.
Senior
Jason Anderson (C, Colorado Springs, Colo.) provided a strong presence on the glass with a game-high nine rebounds. He added two assists, a block and a steal, while hitting 3-of-4 from the field and scoring seven points.
The Griffins came out and took a 6-2 lead, but it would prove to be their largest lead of the game, as the ThunderWolves responded with a 13-2 run and led 15-8 five minutes into the contest. Oldham sparked the run with a 3-pointer and then Simental and McGhee each scored five points.
The lead was eight at 22-14 with 12:25 left after a Gilbert 3-pointer, but the Griffins battled back to tie the game for the last time at 27-27. With 5:30 left a Simental jumper restarted the Pack and an 8-0 run had the home team ahead 35-27 with four minutes remaining in the opening half.
The teams traded buckets to the halftime buzzer with CSU-Pueblo holding a 40-34 advantage.
The ThunderWolves responded to every Westminster mini run and never let the lead dip below two possessions to start the second half. They increased their advantage to 10 at 60-50 with 12:49 showing on the game clock, but a 7-0 run by the visitors cut the lead to just three with 11:14 left, which forced a Head Coach
Matt Hammer timeout.
The Pack came out of the quick break and scored the game's next six points with four points from Sanchious. Oldham then knocked down two 3-pointers in span of three possessions to open an 11-point lead at 72-61 and 7:13 left.
The ThunderWolves kept hitting shots in a half where whey posted 57.1 percent from the field and held a two-possession lead the rest of the way, en route to the nine-point victory, 84-75.
Next up is the No. 9 team in NCAA Division II, as Dixie State University (9-0, 4-0 RMAC) visits Massari Arena for a 7:30 p.m. tilt. The evening features Pueblo County District 70 Night, which allows all D70 students in free, while staff members earn a $2 discount on an adult general admission ticket with an ID. Fans are also encouraged to wear a holiday sweater.
