Freshmen Davis and Gould take fourth at Cowboy Open

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov. 2, 2019) – Two freshmen from the Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team made a significant impact in their debut, as Ben Gould (Canyon Country, Calif.) and Jayson Davis (Pueblo, Colo.) placed fourth at the Cowboy Open Saturday. 
 
A total of 18 wrestlers competed for the Pack at the tournament, hosted by University of Wyoming. Six wrestled in the elite division, while 12 battled in the amateur division. 
 
Both Gould and Davis found success in the amateur division of the first open tournament of the season. 
 
Davis wrestled to a 4-2 record at 184. He won his first two bouts by identical 9-5 decisions against unattached wrestlers. In the quarterfinals, the freshman posted a win by pin fall at 2:16 of the first period against a wrestler from Newman University. He lost in the semifinals by fall to be relegated to the consolation side of the bracket. The consolation semifinal went the way of Davis by another first period fall, this time at 1:22. He would lose the third place bout by a 7-1 decision to an unattached wrestler from Air Force Academic Prep.
 
Gould went 3-2 at 197. In the opening round he lost by a 6-4 decision to a wrestler from Colorado School of Mines, but won his next three matches. He won by a 4-1 decision against a wrestler from Western Colorado University and then won by a 3-2 decision in consolation round of four. He avenged his loss to the same Mines wrestler in the consolation semifinals by a 6-0 decision, but lost to a different Mines wrestler in the third place bout by a 10-6 decision. 
 
In the elite division, three athletes totaled at least two victories. 
 
Junior Ruben Garcia (Selma, Calif.) went 3-2 at 165, as he won 8-6 in his opening bout and then fell in his next match to move to the consolation bracket. The junior won his next bout by a 7-4 decision before posting a win by pin at 2:13. Garcia's day would end with a loss in the consolation round of eight. 
 
Gavin Melendez (R-Jr., Los Banos, Calif.) went 2-2 at 149. He won his first two bouts by 9-7 and 3-1 decisions, respectfully. A 3-2 decision loss in the quarterfinals moved him to the consolation bracket where he lost his next match by a 3-1 decision. 
 
Jair Flores (R-Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) won his first two bouts at 165, as he won by a 7-5 decision and an 8-1 decision to move to the quarterfinals. Back-to-back losses ended his day at 2-2
 
There were two student-athletes who secured at least two wins in the amateur division. 
 
At 165, sophomore Elijah Valdez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 2-2 with two falls. He lost his first bout, then recorded second period pins at 4:04 and 3:58. He lost by pin fall in the consolation round of eight. 
 
Freshman Trevor Singleton (Pueblo, Colo.) went 2-2 at 149, as he won by fall at 2:31 in his opening bout and then lost by a pin. On the consolation side of the bracket he won by an 8-4 decision before falling in his next match. 
 
Next up is the Northern Colorado Open Nov. 10 in Greeley, Colo.
