PUEBLO, Colo. (October 19, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Swimming & Diving started its season with a pair of wins in a quad meet held at the Sam Jones Aquatic Center Saturday.
The Pack earned its first ever win over Colorado College. They knocked off the Tigers 154-127. After six tries, the Pack picked up its first victory over Colorado College.
CSU-Pueblo also defeated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe, Adams State University 181-90. The Pack fell just short of its first win over Western Colorado University, as the Mountaineers bested the Pack by just five points, 141-136.
The ThunderWolves set a new pool record in the 200 free relay. The team of
Selina Wang,
Jillian Abrian, Julia Whitfield and
Phoebe Pontious shattered the previous Sam Jones Aquatic Center record with a time of 1:41.16. This time also stands as the fifth fastest 200 free relay time in program history.
The Pack's lone senior, Pontious (Caledonia, Mich.) led the Pack with two wins. Pontious took first in the 50 free with a time of 25.09.She returned later to claim first in the 50 fly thanks to a time of 27.59, just .16 seconds ahead of second place. Pontious also placed third in the 100 fly (1:01.66).
Wang (Fr., Taipei, Taiwan) also secured the first win of her Pack career. With a time of 55.20, Wang won the 100 free, narrowly edging out Whitfield (So., Wichita, Kan.) by .12 seconds. Wang also took second in the 50 free with a time of 25.25. Whitfield completed the Pack's sweep of the medal slots with a third place showing (25.81).
McKenna Hauber (Fr., Gillette, Wyo.) picked up her first win in a CSU-Pueblo uniform. Hauber took the top spot in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:17.76 stood 1.24 seconds ahead of her closest competition.
Hauber also claimed second place in the 500 free (5:28.26). Fellow freshman,
Rashelle Freeman (Temecula, Calif.) came away with second place in the 200 free.
The Pack will look to avenge their loss to the Mountaineers in a rematch next week at 12 p.m. at the Sam Jones Aquatic Center. The Pack will honor Pontious on her senior day at the event.
