Pack S&D beats Firestorm for first win of 2018-19

PHOENIX, Ariz. (January 5, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Swimming & Diving earned its first win of the 2018-19 season with a 140-104 victory over Arizona Christian University Saturday at the Phoenix Swim Club.
 
Natalie Rotondo (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) picked up three wins for the second consecutive meet. Rontondo bested the field in the 50 fly with a time of 27.52. The freshman also took first in the 100 fly (1:02.92). She wrapped up her day with a first place finish in the 200 fly (2:21.01).
 
Phoebe Pontious (Jr., Caledonia, Mich.) sprinted to a first place finish in the 50 free with a time of 25.20. Pontious led the Pack to a sweep of the medal positions in the 50 free. Julia Whitfield (Fr., Wichita, Kan.) placed second in the event with a mark of 25.95. April McDonough took third (26.53).
 
Pontious picked up first place in the 100 free in a time of 56.20. She completed her individual events with second place points in the 200 free (2:12.55).
 
McDonough (Sr., Frisco, Texas) touched the wall in a time of 2:09.51 to win the 200 free. She also placed third in the 100 free (59.09).
 
Whitfield claimed second in the 100 free (57.61). She also took third in the 200 free (2:13.01). The Pack swept the top three spots in each of the three freestyle events.
 
The ThunderWolves won the 800 free relay. Rotondo, Pontious, Whitfield, and McDonough reached the wall in 8:50.67. They beat the Firestorm's top relay team by 15 seconds.
 
Kate Miller (So., Draper, Utah) collected a trio of second place finishes. Miller recorded a time of 33.79 in the 50 breast. She also was the runner up in the 100 breast (1:15.28) and the 200 breast (2:50.62).
 
Senior Jade Irick (Idaho Falls, Idaho) was the Pack's top scorer in the backstroke. Irick placed third in the 50 back (30.10). She finished second in the 100 back (1:03.50) and the 200 back (2:20.25).
 
The Pack improved their record to 1-3 in dual meets. They will resume Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference competition next week when they compete against Adams State University and University of Nebraska Kearney Friday in Alamosa and Saturday at 10 a.m. in Pueblo at the Sam Jones Aquatic Center.
