PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 31, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team returns home Feb. 1-2 for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contests at Massari Arena beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the ThunderWolves welcome No. 16 Colorado School of Mines and Saturday the Pack are set to battle University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
PROMOTIONS
Friday is Student Appreciation Night and the first 100 CSU-Pueblo students, with ID, will receive a free T-shirt.
Saturday the ThunderWolves will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
LAST TIME OUT
• CSU-Pueblo has lost five straight and are 5-14 overall with a 3-10 RMAC record. Last weekend the team wrapped a four-game road trip with losses to South Dakota Mines (78-60) and Black Hills State (94-79).
• The team's shooting struggles continued against the Hardrockers. The Pack shot 30.8 percent in the first half and scored just 19 points, while they finished shooting 36.1 percent and scored in the 60's for the third straight game. The Hardrockers shot 50 percent in the game and won the rebounding battle 45-30.
• The Pack were led by sophomore Corey Seng, who totaled 14 points for the only member of the team in double figures. He added four rebounds with a team-high three steals and two assists.
• Against BHSU, the ThunderWolves shot 41.2 percent from the field and allowed the Yellow Jackets to post a 51.7 percentage. CSU-Pueblo got to the line and attempted 11 more free throws than BHSU, as it went 27-of-34 (79.4%) from the charity stripe. The Pack forced 16 turnovers and produced 19 points off those miscues. The ThunderWolves lost the rebounding battle 38-24, which included nine offensive boards the Yellow Jackets turned into 18 second chance points.
• For the second straight night, the Pack were led by Seng, as he scored 15 and added a team-high eight rebounds. He also led the team with three steals, as he totaled six for the weekend. Seng got to the free throw line 10 times and knocked down seven of those attempts.
• Donovan Oldham added 14 points and shot 57.1 percent from the field. He added four rebounds, two steals and a block.
THE PACK
• During this losing streak, the ThunderWolves are shooting 38.8 percent and allowing 47.5 percent. CSU-Pueblo has limited turnovers and are winning that category in that stretch, 70-59.
• The Pack are 2-4 at home this season. Seven of the final nine games are at home.
• CSU-Pueblo is fourth in the RMAC in total rebounds with 682.
• CSU-Pueblo owns 3.5 blocks per game to rank fourth in the league, while its 88 total blocks is also fourth.
• The ThunderWolves have knocked down 9.1 3-pointers per game (172 total is fourth) this season to sit fifth in the conference.
• The Pack are scoring 75.6 points per game, but allowing 81.3 points per contest this season.
• Redshirt-junior Donovan Oldham leads the team and ranks 17th in the RMAC with 14.1 points per game. His 85.0 percent shooting from the charity stripe is good for sixth in the conference. He went 12-for-12 from the line against Arkansas-Fort Smith to tie for first in the league with the most free throws made while posting a perfect percentage.
• Redshirt-junior Jason Anderson is second on the team with 11.0 points per game. He is shooting at a 60.0 percent clip this season. His 5.3 rebounds per game is a team best.
• Redshirt-senior Gavin Liggett has dropped a team-best 39 3-pointers to rank tied for ninth in the RMAC. He's 11th in 3-point field goals per game with 2.1. He attempted 17 3-pointers at Westminster to have the second most attempts in a game by a member of the RMAC this season. He hit eight of those 17 attempts.
• Junior Harvey Barr has 18 blocks this season to rank tied for eighth in the conference (0.9 rpg). His five blocks against Dixie State ranks tied for the most by an RMAC player this season.
• Freshman Tyson Gilbert dished out 10 assists at Dixie State to post the second most assists in a game by a member of the RMAC this season.
• Sophomore Corey Seng recorded three straight double-doubles from Dec. 14-Jan. 4. In those three games he averaged 13 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, while shooting 48.3 percent from the field. He pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds against Colorado Christian, while his 17 points against Westminster was just shy of a career-high (18 points last season).
• Head Coach Ralph Turner is in his eighth season as bench boss of the Pack and owns a 114-99 (.535) overall record. He coached his 200th game as a member of the ThunderWolves Nov. 24 against Lubbock Christian.
THE OREDIGGERS
• The Orediggers have won 15 straight and own a 16-3 overall record with a perfect 13-0 mark in league play. Mines is ranked No. 16 in the the NABC coaches' poll and No. 17 in the D2SIDA sports information poll.
• CSM has a +13.1 scoring margin to rank first in the RMAC and 15th nationally. The advantage is twice that of second in the league (+6.2). The Orediggers are scoring 83.8 points and allowing 70.7 points per game.
• Mines is 12th nationally with a 50.6 field goal percentage and fifth in Division II with a 41.8 percentage from long range. The team owns a +7.2 rebounding margin to lead the RMAC and sit 19th nationally. The Orediggers have a 1.42 assist/turnover ratio that is also a league best and ranks 22nd nationally. Mines's 4.8 blocked shots per game is 13th in DII and a league-best. The squad also has the fewest total turnovers in the conference this season (22nd in Division II).
• Mason Baker is 10th in the league in scoring with 15.5 points per game.
• Ben Sonnefeld is second in the RMAC with 4.3 assists per game, while his 3.0 assist/turnover ratio not only leads the RMAC, but sits 14th in Division II. He is second on the team with 14 points per game.
• Ben Clare's 59.4 field goal percentage is a RMAC-best and ranks 25th nationally. His 1.3 blocks per game is good for fourth. Clare has posted 12.1 points per game this season.
• Michael Glen leads the team and ranks tied for sixth in the conference with 7.2 rebounds per game. His 1.1 blocks per game is sixth in the league. He also adds 10.9 points per game.
• Brendan Sullivan is a fifth member of the squad to average double-figures in scoring with 11.7 points per game. He is shooting 55.9 percent from the field.
THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
• The Mountain Lions are 12-7 overall with a 9-4 conference record to rank tied for third in the league standings. UCCS had won 10 straight before going on a road and losing to Chadron State (90-75) and MSU Denver (93-81).
• UCCS is averaging 82.2 points per game to rank fourth in the league and is allowing 80.9 points per contest.
• In the RMAC, the Mountain Lions are second in both assists per game (15.5 apg) and assist/turnover ratio (1.14). UCCS is third in the conference in steals per game (7.4 spg) and turnover margin (+1.3). They rank fourth in the league in field goal percentage with a 46.2 percentage from the field. Their 9.4 3-pointers per game is also fourth.
• Blend Avdili leads the team in points (13.4 ppg) and assists (2.9 apg) per game and ranks eighth in the league with a 1.3 assist/turnover ratio.
• Padiet Wang is second in the RMAC with 2.11 steals per game. He adds 12.5 points per game. Both Avdili and Brandon Malone lead the team with 35 3-pointers made. Malone owns 11.4 points per game. There are five players scoring in double figures, as DaRaun Clark has 11.2 points per game and Elijah Ross, a Preseason All-RMAC selection, adds 10.3 points per game.
LOOKING AHEAD
• The ThunderWolves continue the homestand Feb. 8-9 against Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines.
