PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 3, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team opens the New Year Jan. 4-5 with a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip to Denver to battle Colorado Christian University and Regis University. Both contests are set for 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
• CSU-Pueblo is 3-8 with an 1-4 RMAC record following snapping a six-game losing streak before the break. The Pack suffered a 95-89 overtime road loss to Westminster Dec. 14 after holding a second half lead. The ThunderWolves broke the skid Dec. 15 at Dixie State with a 77-66 victory.
• At Westminster, the ThunderWolves held the lead at the half (43-35) for the third straight game, but couldn't hold on to suffer their sixth straight loss. The Pack, playing without three players who had started at some point this season, knocked down 14 3-pointers, while the Griffins hit 10. CSU-Pueblo shot 55.2 percent from the field in the first half, but would finish the game hitting on 45.6 percent of their attempts. WC was the opposite, shooting 44.4 percent in the first frame and finishing with a 51.6 percentage, which included going 5-for-6 (83.3%) in the overtime session. The ThunderWolves tied a season-low with just eight turnovers and tied in the rebounding category 38-38. The Pack lost the extra session by the score of 20-14.
• Senior Gavin Liggett (G, Limon, Colo.) dropped 24 points on eight 3-pointers in 40 minutes. Freshman Tyson Gilbert (G, Highland Ranch, Colo.) filled the stat sheet with a near triple double, as he posted 16 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals with zero turnovers.
• Sophomore Corey Seng (G/F, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) recorded his first double-double of his career with 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Freshman Cade Carrol (F, Buena Visa, Colo.) scored seven of his 12 points in the final five minutes of regulation and added six rebounds. Donovan Oldham (R-Jr., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 11 points and six rebounds after playing in all 45 minutes.
• In the win against the Trailblazers, the Pack outrebounded DSU 44-27 and held the lead for more than 37 minutes of the game. CSU-Pueblo again led at the break, but this time was able to close out the game by winning the second half 46-38.
• Donovan earned his first double-double of the season, as he scored 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe. He also hauled in a season-high 10 rebounds.
• Seng picked up his second double-double in as many nights, as he scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds. All 10 of Seng's points came in the second half. He went 6-of-8 at the line.
• Junior Harvey Barr narrowly missed a double-double of his own. Barr scored nine points on 4-of-7 shooting. He added a team-high 11 rebounds. Barr set a career-high with five blocks.
• Gilbert tacked on 14 points, including 7-of-10 shooting from the line. He added four assists. Liggett totaled 13 points and made three from downtown. He came away with two steals.
THE PACK
• The Pack are 1-3 this season in true road games.
• CSU-Pueblo owns a 75.8 percentage from the free throw line to rank third in the RMAC.
• The ThunderWolves have knocked down 8.9 3-pointers per game (87 total) this season to sit fourth in the conference.
• The Pack are scoring 76.3 points per game, but allowing 84.2 points per contest this season.
• CSU-Pueblo has a positive rebound margin at +2.2 and has 3.3 blocks per game
• Redshirt-junior Donovan Oldham leads the team and ranks eighth in the RMAC with 16.7 points per game. His 88.0 percent shooting from the charity stripe is good for fourth in the conference. His 34.3 minutes per game is fourth.
• Redshirt-junior Jason Anderson is second on the team with 12.7 points per game. He is shooting 62.8 percent from the field to rank fourth in the conference and 19th nationally. His 6.3 rebounds per game is a team best, while his 4.9 defensive boards per contest ranks eighth in the conference.
• Redshirt-senior Gavin Liggett is ninth in 3-point field goals per game with 2.4. His 26 made 3-pointers is tied for eighth.
• Junior Harvey Barr has 11 blocks this season to rank tied for sixth in the conference.
• Freshman Cade Carrol has played in all 11 games with one start and is averaging 8.8 points in 21.5 minutes per game.
• Head Coach Ralph Turner is in his eighth season as bench boss of the Pack and owns a 112-93 (.546) overall record. He coached his 200th game as a member of the ThunderWolves Nov. 24 against Lubbock Christian.
THE COUGARS
• The Cougars are 2-9 overall with an 0-5 record in RMAC play. CCU has lost six straight and own a 1-4 record at home. Before the holiday, the Cougars lost on the road to Colorado School of Mines (97-80) and UCCS (73-70).
• CCU is scoring 70.7 points per game and allowing 81.1 for a league-worst -10.4 points per game margin.
• The team leads the league in free throw percentage (76.7%), ranks third in the RMAC in 3-point field goal percentage (40.7%) and fourth in field goal percentage (47.2%).
• Four players are scoring in double figures, while three have 13 points per game. Justin Engesser leads the way with 13.6 points per game and adds a team-best 3.4 assists per contest. Jeremiah Hanson has 13.2 points per game with a team-high 18 3-pointers. Braxton Tucker leads the league with a 63.0 field goal percentage and has 13.1 points per game. Stephan Hackethal adds 10.3 points per game.
THE RANGERS
• The Rangers are 6-5 overall with a 3-2 mark in RMAC play. RU has lost three straight and enter the weekend with a 4-2 home record. The Rangers lost on home (78-73) Dec. 19 to Eastern New Mexico, while the weekend before went on the road and fell to UCCS (84-80) and Mines (80-73).
• Regis is averaging 76.9 points per game and allowing 73.0 points per contest.
• The Rangers are second in the RMAC in free throw percentage (75.8%), fifth in assist to turnover ratio (1.03) and are tied for fifth in 3-pointers per game (8.6).
• Jarrett Brodbeck is tied for sixth in the RMAC with 17.3 points per game, while Christian Little is 10th with 16.1 points per contest. Brodbeck owns 3.27 3-pointers per game to sit second in the league, while his 40.9 percentage from long range is fourth. Little is sixth with a 54.4 field goal percentage and seventh with 3.7 assists per game.
• Ryan Beisty is fourth in the RMAC with 7.5 rebounds per game, while Brian Dawson has a league-best 91.4 percentage from the charity stripe.
LOOKING AHEAD
• The ThunderWolves will return home Jan. 11-12 after a month away from Massari Arena to welcome Western State Colorado University and Colorado Mesa University. Both contests are set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
