PUEBLO, Colo. (Jan. 23, 2019) - Two
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals are on tap for the T-No. 7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team, as the ThunderWolves travel to Adams State University Thursday, Jan. 24 before hosting Colorado School of Mines Saturday, Jan. 26 at Massari Arena. Both bouts are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
The Pack (9-2, 3-0 RMAC) are coming off a 3-1 week where they defeated New Mexico Highlands University 37-6at home before battling with three nationally ranked teams at the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Nebraska. The ThunderWolves stared with a 23-18 loss to No. 6 Lindenwood University, then defeated No. 23 Newman University 24-16 and finished with a 19-15 win against No. T-12 Fort Hays State University. CSU-Pueblo moved to 4-2 this season when facing teams in the top 25.
At 141,
PT Garcia (R-Sr., Denver, Colo.) went 3-1 and led the team with 15 points, as two of his wins came by fall. He leads the team this season with eight pins. He led a group of five total wrestlers who earned three wins on the week.
Preston Lauterbach (R-Sr., Bellevue, Neb.) recorded 13 points with a 3-0 record, as he scored a fall against Lindenwood in just 26 seconds and produced a major decision against NMHU. No. 7
Haszell West (R-Jr., Portland, Ore.) went 3-0, as he totaled 12 team points, which included a fall in 47 seconds versus FHSU. Both West and Lauterbatch are undefeated this season with 6-0 and 14-0 records, respectfully.
At 125,
Josiah Seaton (R-Sr., Bonner Springs, Kan.) was 3-1 with a pin at 5:53 against the Cowboys and two decision wins to produce 12 points for the ThunderWolves. Finally, sophomore
Gavin Melendez (Los Banos, Calif.) added 10 points with a 3-0 mark, as he highlighted his week with a 14-4 major decision versus FHSU.
In the Jan. 11 release of the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, the ThunderWolves moved up from T-11th to a tie for seventh. The same four student-athletes from the previous rankings were still in the top 10, while three moved up a couple spots.
D'Andre Brumfield (R-Jr., Dallas, Texas) was bumped up to No. 2 from No. 4 at 133. He owns a 14-4 overall record with two falls.
Gavin Nye (R-Fr., Gerber, Calif.) remained at No. 4 at heavyweight and leads the team in wins with a 17-6 record.
Tarrence Williams (Sr., Portland, Ore.) is 3-0 and moved up two spots to No. 7 at 184 West is a perfect 14-0 and was moved up to No. 7 from No. 10 at 197.
The ThunderWolves are the only ranked member of the RMAC.
Adams State is 4-1 overall and 3-1 in RMAC duals this season. The Grizzlies last defeated New Mexico Highlands by a 35-7 result and have won four straight duals. ASU doesn't have any ranked wrestlers, but Jonathan Andreatta at 125 was the RMAC Wrestler of the Week Jan. 15 after going 5-0 at the Western Colorado Open and Tracy Borah Duals.
Mines enters Saturday's contest with a 10-2 dual record, which includes a perfect 5-0 mark against RMAC competition. The Orediggers don't have an individual ranked nationally, but have proved to be a solid dual team with wins last weekend against No. 23 Newman 31-8 and No. 18 University of Central Oklahoma 22-21. The squad owns a 5-2 record against teams ranked in the top 25 this season.
