ThunderWolves post two victories at Tracy Borah Duals Saturday

GUNNISON, Colo. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The No. T-7 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team won twice Saturday at the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, Colorado. 
 
In the morning, the ThunderWolves defeated San Francisco State University 37-12 and then followed it up with a 30-9 afternoon win against Simon Fraser University. 
 
Five members of the Pack went 2-0 on the day. Both PT Garcia (R-Sr., Denver, Colo.) at 141 and No. 7 Haszell West (R-Jr., Portland, Ore.) scored nine team points with a pin against SFSU and a decision win versus SFU. Garcia posted his sixth fall of the season in the first period at 1:38 and then won by an 8-3 decision. West earned the fall in the second period at 3:44 and then won 5-3 in his second bout. 
 
Ranked No. 4 nationally at heavyweight, redshirt-freshman Gavin Nye (Gerber, Calif.) posted a 5-0 decision in his first match and then had the biggest win of the day with an 11-2 major decision victory against No. 6 Ciaran Ball of Simon Fraser. 
 
At 125, Josiah Seaton (Bonner Springs, Kan.) totaled eight points for the Pack with an 8-2 decision in the first bout, then a dominating 19-1 tech fall performance against SFU. 
 
Finally, No. 2 D'Andre Brumfield (R-Jr., Dallas, Texas) inched out two wins with a 6-5 decision and an 11-9 win where he earned a takedown in the first sudden victory period. 
 
The Pack earned the win against SFSU, which is an affiliate member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, by posting eight match victories. The ThunderWolves totaled four falls and a major decision. 
 
CSU-Pueblo won the first five bouts to open a 22-0 lead. After Seaton, Brumfield and Garcia wins, Jasiah Williams (R-So., Portland, Ore.) won by pin at 6:43 at 149 and Isaiah Diggs (R-Jr., Federal, Wash.) was victorious at 157 by a 10-2 major decision. 
 
Two more falls came at 174 by Preston Lauterbach (R-Sr., Bellevue, Neb.) in 1:46 and by West at 197. Nye capped the team's victory with his decision win that handed the Pack their largest team score of the season. 
 
Again, the first three weight classes set the tone in the matchup with Simon Fraser. The Pack were ahead 11-0 before SFU forfeited at 149 and 165 to help give the Pack a 23-3 lead after six bouts. 
 
West's decision win lifted the advantage to 26-9 before Nye finished off the day with his major win against a fellow ranked wrestler. 
 
WESTERN COLORADO OPEN
 
Friday, a group of ThunderWolves competed at the Western Colorado Open in Gunnison. Notable performances included the following:
 
Justin Davis (R-Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) was third at 157 in a bracket with 10 wrestlers. He went 4-1 after losing his opening bout. Davis recorded three decision wins and a tech fall. 
 
Head Coach Dax Charles used the Open as an opportunity for this 165-pounders to wrestle off, as three of the four participants in the weight class were from the Pack. Zane Zeman (R-Jr., Avon, Ohio) proved victorious with a 3-0 record to finish first. Both his wins against fellow ThunderWolves were by a one-point decision. 
 
HOME WEDNESDAY
 
The ThunderWolves return home Wednesday, Jan. 16 for a RMAC dual against New Mexico Highlands University beginning at 6 p.m.
