Brumfield, Nye and West go 3-0 to lead Pack to 2-1 trip at Las Vegas Desert Duals

PUEBLO, Colo. (Dec. 18, 2018) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team went 2-1 at the Las Vegas Desert Duals Monday to improve to 3-1 in dual competition before heading to the holiday break. 
 
The ThunderWolevs started the day with a 31-11 victory against No. 6 Minnesota State University, Mankato to establish their second win against a top 10 team in just three days time. Next, the Pack fell just short in a 20-16 loss to No. 8 University of Pittsburg-Johnstown. Finally, CSU-Pueblo closed the day against Coe College, who ranks No. 11 in NCAA Division III, and won 27-15. 
 
Three ThunderWolves went a perfect 3-0 on the day and all three were victorious in the upset of No. 2 University of Nebraska-Kearney, so the trio head to break with a 4-0 dual record.
 
Ranked No. 5 at 133, D'Andre Brumfield (R-Jr., Dallas, Texas) helped the Pack score bonus points twice, as he recorded a pin at 5:00 against MSU and followed that with a 13-5 major decision win against Pitt-Johnstown. He faced a Coe opponent ranked No. 4 in DIII and won by a 6-3 decision. 
 
At 197, Haszell West (R-Jr., Portland, Ore.) improved to 8-0 on the season, as he started the day with a 17-5 major decision and then won 13-7 and 8-4 to close out the day. 
 
At heavyweight, Gavin Nye (R-Fr., Gerber, Calif.) grabbed three more wins and now leads the team in victories with a 13-5 record. He won by a 9-3 decision against MSU, 10-3 decision against UPJ and closed the day with a pin at 4:32 versus his Coe opponent. 
 
Tarrence Williams (R-Sr., Portland, Ore.) finished the day 2-0 and improved to 3-0 on the season, as he posted two narrow decision wins. He won by a 3-2 decision against MSU and then defeated his Pitt-Johnstown opponent by a 6-4 decision. 
 
PT Garcia (R-Sr., Denver, Colo.) went 2-1 on the day, as he won by fall against the Mavericks at 5:45 and then picked up another pin against Coe, this time in the first period at 1:30. 
 
The Pack rolled up the Mavericks with seven match wins and totaled four bonus point victories, as the first three weight classes recorded a pin. Josiah Seaton (R-Sr., Bonner Springs, Kan.) started things off with a late third period fall at 6:28 and then the Brumfield and Garcia pins gave the ThunderWolves an 18-0 lead. Isaiah Diggs (R-Jr., Federal, Wash.) also got in on the scoring with a 7-3 decision win at 157. Wins by Williams, West and Nye finished things up for the lopsided victory. 
 
Pitt-Johnstown got the best of the ThunderWolves by recording bonus point wins, as both squads won five bouts. Gavin Melendez (R-So., Los Banos, Calif. ) picked up a win at 157 by an 8-3 decision, but heading to the final three weight classes, CSU-Pueblo trailed 20-7. The Pack won all three, but only by decision to take their first dual loss of the early season.
 
The ThunderWolves recorded six match wins against Coe. Brumfield and Garcia won, then Zane Zeman (Jr., Avon, Ohio) got his first dual win as a member of the Pack with an 11-6 decision at 165. Again the final three bouts proved to be the difference, as CSU-Pueblo trailed 15-12 with just those three matches left. Preston Lauterbach (R-Sr., Bellevue, Neb.) got his second pin of season when he won at 184 in just 1:31 of match time. West moved the score to 21-15 with a decision victory and then Nye capped it off with his team-leading sixth pin of the season.
 
Zeman also picked up a win at 165 in an exhibition match to improve to 2-0. He defeated Daum Keyes of Northeastern by a 17-2 tech fall.  
 
Maxwell Martell (R-Fr., Meridian, Ohio) gathered a 14-5 decision win at 184 in an exhibition match against a member of North Central.
 
After the break, the ThunderWolves begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home duals when Chadron State College visits Massari Arena for a 5 p.m. bout.
