PUEBLO, Colo. (January 18, 2017) - The No. 21 Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts and defeated Colorado Mesa University, 25-6 at Massari Arena Wednesday in the home opener.
The win was the first in a dual format against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals since 2012. Last season in Grand Junction, Colorado, the ThunderWolves fell 40-6.
Nine of the 10 matches resulted in a decision, as junior 165 JaCobi Jones (Omaha, Neb.) secured a 10-1 major decision victory. Jones entered the dual ranked No. 3 nationally, while his opponent was No. 12 Jason Buhr. The bout was a rematch of the 2016 RMAC Championship match at 157 where Jones was also victorious.
The Pack led 9-6 through five matches, but the Jones win started a run of the Pack winning the final five of the evening. Jones was also the only wrestler to reach 10 or more points in any of the match-ups.
Three ThunderWolves won their bouts by a four-point margin, as junior Jared Mestas (141, Pueblo, Colo.) won 6-2, redshirt-freshman JaVaughn Perkins (184, Omaha, Neb.) posted an 8-4 win and heavyweight Augie DeSantis (R-Jr., Escondido, Calif.) earned a 5-1 victory.
The Pack improved to 6-3 in dual competition this season, while Colorado Mesa went to 8-3.
