Roadrunners claw past ThunderWolves

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 28, 2016) – The seventh-seeded Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team snapped its 11-game win streak Thursday, dropping a 7-1 decision against 2-seed Metro State University Denver in the opening round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.played in Grand Junction at top-seed Colorado Mesa University.

The 2016 tournament is being held at the site of top-seeded Colorado Mesa University and with rain overnight, pushed back the start of Thursday's games.

As the lower seed CSU-Pueblo played as the visiting team and managed two singles in the first inning on hits by Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) and Dora Hernandez (Sr., Benton City, Wash.) but was unable to plate any runs.

MSU Denver scored four runs in their half on two hits including a walk with the bases loaded and a 4-0 lead.

The Roadrunners added another run in the second inning, chasing Pack pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) from the game. Davalos was tabbed for five runs on five hits and two walks allowed in one-plus inning pitched.

Designated player Lexie Martindale (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) came on to pitch in relief, allowing two runs in the third inning before settling in, giving up just two hits and no runs over the final three innings in the circle.

The ThunderWolves managed ten hits against MSU Denver starter Cassidy Smith.

Hernandez, Turney and Michaela Burpee (Fr., Union City, Calif.) accounted for six of the Pack's ten hits.

Vivian Ledesma (Fr., Colton, Calif.) picked up her first hit in the seventh, hitting a single down the line, scoring Burpee who led off with a double, the Pack's only extra-base hit.

The ThunderWolves left seven runners on base and recorded at least one hit in each inning.

CSU-Pueblo (18-30) drops into the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament and next will play No. 6 seed UCCS Friday at 8:30 a.m. at CMU Softball Field.
