CSU-Pueblo splits Saturday doubleheader versus Western N.M.

SILVER CITY, N.M. (April 2, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team split a Saturday doubleheader against Western New Mexico falling 1-0 in the series opener before bouncing back with a convincing 8-0 victory in five innings in game two.

In game one the ThunderWolves and Mustangs battled scoreless through four innings with the teams combining for four hits, all singles over that span.

Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) and Shelby Bennett (Fr., Norco, Calif.) accounted for two of the three hits in the game for CSU-Pueblo.

Pack pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was coasting through the Mustang lineup until when in the home half of the fifth inning WNMU's Ariana Maldonado connected on a solo shot to left field, breaking the scoreless affair.

CSU-Pueblo was unable to answer in the final two innings, dropping the one run contest 1-0.

Davalos went the distance, tossing six innings and allowing the lone run and three strikeouts.

Game two CSU-Pueblo made quick work of WNMU, shutting out the Mustangs 8-0 in a run-ruled five inning game.

The ThunderWolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, taking advantage of three Mustang errors while playing small ball.

The Pack added another run in the next inning on a sac flyout by Wolfe.

The lead was cushioned in the fourth with three hits including an RBI-double by Morgan Hatfield (Fr., Upland, Calif.) scoring Michaela Burpee (Fr., Union City, Calif.) who led off with a walk.

CSU-Pueblo continued putting it on the Mustangs in the fifth with two more runs on three hits for an 8-0 lead.

Wolfe, making her tenth appearance in the circle, threw five innings and allowed no runs on three hits and two strikeouts, improving to 1-8 on the season.

CSU-Pueblo (7-28, 6-18 RMAC) concludes the four game series with another doubleheader Sunday, first pitch at 11 a.m. at WNMU Softball Field.
