ThunderWolves earn split at Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (February 20, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team split its first doubleheader to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday versus Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colorado.

The Pack dropped game one 8-1 before rebounding with a convincing 14-2 victory in five innings in the nightcap.

In the opener the ThunderWolves scored the games' first run in the top of the second inning on an RBI-double by Kennedy Smith (Jr., Fillmore, Calif.), scoring Morgan Hatfield (Fr., Upland, Calif.) who reached via base on balls.

Colorado Christian responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 3-1 lead on a three-run homerun blast.

The Cougars added to the lead in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on five hits in the frame including a grand slam homerun surrendered.

The Pack was held at bay offensively, collecting four hits in the contest.

In the nightcap the ThunderWolves erupted for a season high fourteen runs on thirteen hits in a 14-2 thrashing of the Cougars.

Junior second baseman Moriah Turney (Brighton, Colo.) started the offensive outburst with a triple to begin the game. Turney scored in the next at bat on a single off the bat of Vivian Ledesma (Fr., Colton, Calif.).

Following a walk and an illegal pitch set the stage for Alyssa Ubrun (So., Olympia, Wash.) who hit her first triple of the year to left centerfield, collecting two RBIs.

Colorado Christian scored its only two runs of the ballgame in the home half of the first inning.

The Pack capitalized on two Cougar errors in the third, plating two runs, extending the lead 5-2.

A scoreless fourth set up the ThunderWolves for its biggest scoring output of the year in the top half of the fifth, scoring nine runs on eight hits.

The inning was highlighted by a three-run bomb off the bat of Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) along with an two-RBI triple by Nicole Montoya (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and three other Pack players collecting RBI singles in the inning.

Starting pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had her best outing in a Pack uniform, tossing five innings, allowing one earned run while striking out two in improving to 2-4 on the season.

The teams will conclude its four game series Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Park.
