ThunderWolves fall in final dual of the season

RESULTS

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (February 17, 2016) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo wrestling team finished the 2015-16 dual season Wednesday with a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss at New Mexico Highlands University.

The ThunderWolves fell 19-18 and capped the dual season with a 2-11 overall record and a 1-5 mark in RMAC competition.

No. 8 Jacob Mitchell (Jr., Portland, Ore.) won at heavyweight to start the dual, as he improved to 11-1 with nine falls. He went a perfect 7-0 with six falls in dual competition and was 3-0 in RMAC duals.

A Pack forfeit at 125, then decision losses at 133 and 141 gave the Cowboys a 12-6 lead. The ThunderWolves would then win the next four bouts by decision and led 18-12 headed the to final two duals. A CSU-Pueblo loss at 184, then a major decision setback at 197 allowed NMHU to sneak out a one-point dual victory.

Senior Tim Urenda (Pueblo, Colo.) finished the RMAC dual season with a perfect 5-0 record following a 3-1 sudden victory win Wednesday. He will take a 15-6 overall record in the Super Region Four Championships next weekend, as he was 8-1 in dual competition.

Other winners against New Mexico Highlands were Dixon Richins (R-Jr., Coalville, Utah) at 157 by a 7-5 sudden victory effort. Kyle Bateman (Jr., Sandy, Ore.) earned a 3-1 decision at 165 and Josh Castellano (So., Wood Dale, Ill.) posted a 9-3 decision at 174.

Now the true test awaits the ThunderWolves with the Super Region Four Championships set for Feb. 26-27 in Gunnison, Colorado. The top four athletes at each weight class will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, March 11-12 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
