ThunderWolves split opening day of West Texas A&M Invite

CANYON, Tex. (February 12, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team picked up its first win of the season Friday with an 8-6 win over Angelo State in the nightcap, following a 16-8 loss in the first game of the day versus Lubbock Christian.

In game one of the three day tournament, CSU-Pueblo opened the home half of the first with three runs crossing the plate thanks to three hit batters that set the stage for Shelby Bennett (Fr., Norco, Calif.) who belted her first two RBIs of her career, putting the Pack up 2-0.

Shortstop Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) continued her hot streak, scoring on a passed ball all coming in the opening frame.

CSU-Pueblo plated three more runs in the third inning on five hits. Bennett again stepped to the plate, capitalizing with another two-run single for her fourth RBI of the contest.

Morgan Hatfield (Fr., Upland, Calif.) connected with her first RBI of her collegiate career, adding to the Pack lead 6-1 through three innings.

From that point the flood gates opened for LCU as the Chaparrals went on a 15-2 scoring run over the final four innings including the extra inning to steal the win 16-8.

In the nightcap versus Angelo State, the ThunderWolves scored one run in the top of the third inning on an RBI-single by Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.).

The Pack would put up a seven-spot in their next at bat thanks in part to the first six batters reaching safely on four walks issued and two hit batters.

Hatfield and Wolfe each hit RBI singles, extending the Pack lead 8-0 through 3 1/2 innings of play.

Pack starting pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was coasting through the first five innings in the circle before throwing into a jam when Shannon Lieber (Jr., Lone Tree, Colo.) came on in relief, tossing 1 1/3 innings allowing one hit and striking out one in picking up the save.

Hatfield and Turney each led the Pack with four hits apiece on the day.

CSU-Pueblo (1-6) returns to action with two games scheduled Saturday. The Pack first face off against No. 10 ranked Tarleton State and concluding the day with a matchup with Cameron (Okla.). First pitch against the Texanns is set for 9 a.m. MST. at Buffalo Sports Park in Canyon, Texas.
