Wichita, Kan. (September 6, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team completed a weekend sweep of games Sunday, defeating the Newman University Jets 2-0.
Coming off a 2-1 win Friday at Rogers State, the Pack began Sunday's contest with high intensity and energy, gaining possession early and firing three shots on goal in the first ten minutes of play.
Senior defender Sam Glawe (Allen, Tex.) made his presence known early, setting the tone for the ThunderWolves as he managed two of his game-high three shots in the first period.
"Our guys played a good solid game today," said Pack head coach Roy Stanley. "I feel we had better control offensively and kept the energy the entire game."
Two other Pack players Matt Marchena (Sr., F, Littleton, Colo.) and TJ Thiebaut (Sr., Mid., Pueblo, Colo.) each directed two shot attempts on goal through the first half.
Both teams were physical throughout the game, getting called for eighteen fouls combined and with a flurry of yellow cards issued, made for an exciting contest.
"The game was physical from the start and for our guys to step up to the challenge I felt was nice to see," Stanley added.
The ThunderWolves held a 7-6 shot advantage and 4-3 shots on goal lead through the first half.
Minutes into the second period, Pack goalkeeper Sam Haseltine (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) saved one of his game-high seven shots, allowing the Pack a quick advantage with possession into Jets territory.
In the 54th minute, Glawe controlled the ball from 30 yards from goal, firing a shot high and out of the reach of the Newman goalkeeper, breaking the scoreless game.
The ThunderWolves attack continued as they kept pressure against the Jets defense, forcing a turnover in the 66th minute and taking the ball across midfield.
Santiago Tinta (Fr., Mid., Quito-Ecuador) kicked a shot from 40 yards away from the net, over the top of the goalkeeper reach, netting his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute.
Strong defense the remainder of the game secured the 2-0 win for the Pack.
"We had a good weekend of play, our offense is coming together and we feel the strong nonconference schedule will help in preparing us for when we begin conference play," said Stanley.
With the weekend sweep, the ThunderWolves improve to 2-0 on the young season and will return home Sept. 11 for the home opener versus No. 21-ranked Northeastern State. The Riverhawks are also 2-0 this season. Kickoff is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
The night will also feature the women's team playing Texas Woman's University following the men's game.
